how to update plugins modules

im newbie ..
have installed joomla 3 with full responsive voxel template ..
when i will update any module , plugin , gantry framework i get error ..
how must we update , delete first ? or fix chmod ?
and how to know which files must we remove or fix chmod ?
can someone tell step for step how to update any thing

Hello,
No, you do not need to delete the extension to update. That's the last thing you would want to do, as uninstalling the extension will wipe out your settings/content.
