The Best Way to migrate a Rocket 1.5 site to 2.5

Posted 11 years 9 months ago
    • I’m looking for more infos about upgrading Rocket 1.5 template to 2.5 and I’m still not sure

You can look at this thread (in Rocket forum) that give advice and a step by step that seem all right.

      www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=17..._v=viewtopic#p989727
1 - Take backup of J1.5 site for safety
2 - Create new J2.5 site in different directory
      3 - In J2.5 add SPUpgrade
4 - Open SPUpgrade (see link for tool below) and add the J1.5 database access details and you should get green ok message
5 - Select all core options for transfer - I usually exclude the template option at this point.
6 - Process core transfer and wait for process completed message.
7 - Make a list of all extensions used in J1.5 site and get equivalent 2.5 versions, including template.
8 - When getting extensions check on developer sites to see if they have an upgrade route for their products.
9 - Install Mixxmag 2.5 and any other extensions.
10 - I usually install Akeeba on the 2.5 site and take a backup at this point.
11 - In SPUpgrade use the database tables transfer to bring across tables for extensions. I tend to do one extension at a time e.g. all tables for Community Builder, and then test to see it is all working.
12 - Work through all extensions in turn until site is completed.

SP Upgrade (in the Jed) —> extensions.joomla.org/extensions/migrati...omla-migration/15609

You got other choice, like Migrate Me (that seem good to (if somebody can help here? to choose the right tools)
      extensions.joomla.org/extensions/migrati...omla-migration/24238

I think this is missing some important infos...
      • if you make changes to the templates CSS, Positions, etc and all that you will have to carry those changes to the 2.5 template
—> I suggest here using a software that can see and merge those differences manually.
      Mac —> Diffmerge —> www.sourcegear.com/diffmerge/
      PC —> ExamDiff Pro -> www.prestosoft.com/edp_examdiffpro.asp

      • If you have a multilingual site (joomfish) I suggest looking at Anything Digital with Josetta (a 2.5 multilingual helper) and their 1.5 Joomfish Exporter component that you install on your 1.5 site to export sections, categories, articles and menu items from your Joomfish-enabled site. It will even modify links in your content items to match the new Joomla 2.5 format.
To my knowledge this is the ONLY tool that can do that. — You need to pay for Josetta….
      Josetta info —> anything-digital.com/josetta/the-transla...ager-for-joomla.html
      Joomfish Exporter infos —> anything-digital.com/josetta/learn-more/...fish-to-josetta.html

      QUESTIONS ?????
1— For sure you have to see if and what third party components, plugins can be reinstall as 2.5 and if those Upgrade Tools can transfer their settings to.
      — Here I like to have more infos on the experience of the Rocket communauty

      2— Personally, for the point 2 of the presented point by point here, I’m thinking that if we will be able to use the Rocketlauncher 2.5 of the particular Rocket template (without the sample content) you will have:;
      a) Joomla 2.5
      b) your template in 2.5
      c) All the various needed Rocket, specific Component, modules, plugins and all and template configuration, menus position and all ready to go...

here, you should continue with the process, without the unneeded steps and trouble from the first point by point.

After you need to copy your images folder (watch out for the initial 1.5, set-up and 2.5 set-up (I guess need to be the same)

I even think that starting with the RocketLauncher, even if you have to cleanup all the demo content will be better as you just have to care about the third party components (other than Rocket) to reinstall...

I ask the community here to help with their experience ? :cheesy:

      Thanks in advance.....

I will also update myself my experiments on that post...

    • I have to admit that I am not sure what kind of additional help do you need here. David really explained everything in that thread so I am not sure what else is needed to be said

    • My point here, is to add to this post, to give to Rocket User a good overview of the migrating process and as you can see I already add really essentials points to the post that can help others.
1— Use of Differences checking software to reinstall change parts of a template
      2— Multi language sites situation

      And the most important...
The point that are really RocketTheme oriented and really important to ease the process is the possibility to use (contrary to David) suggestion, is to use the Rocket Launcher (and if it was possible, without the sample content) of a particular template to facilitate the process.

This is on that particular point that I need your advice and also if some users are willing to add their experience to this thread, I think it will be a good service to the Rocket community.

    • I decide to use the RocketLauncher (zephyr)

Without to much problem I was able to regain a clean 2.5 with all the rocket stuff and my own template in. (it was an heavily customized template with custom position and even template manager modification - I mean with Gantry control on some custom position - Custom style declaration.php and gantry.config.php

      Some problems I encounter;

      1— the .rt-joomla was change in 2.5 for .component-content

2— templateDetails.xml, in 2.5 have almost only the template position and files count

3— template-options.xml (new file in 2.5) have the rest of the template parameters (was in templateDetails.xml in 1.5)

3—Custom positions and template parameters are different in 2.5 but relativly easy to understand.

      Next Step — The migration

      • I now I need to prepare the site for multilingual to be able to migrate from Joomfish to Joomla 2.5

      • I don’t know if I have to reinstall all my component & add ons first before doing the migration, I never use those migration tools....
Not sure here , any help?

    • This is what I finally will try for the migration —>
1• Reinstall all 3 party components that can pass from 1.5 to 2.5
2• Install Josetta Jomfish exporter on my 1.5 and Josetta on my 2.5
3• Choose a migration tool - I have to make a choice here

What do you think will be the best ?
