Can you make a living just with Joomla and Templates?

    • Are the devs here just versed in Joomla and a few template sites like Rockettheme or do you need to have more robust capabilities such as your own stylesheet designs and have more capabilities like Magento and Wordpress to do more robust work capabilities?

      Just wondering... Thanks.

    • I personally use only Joomla but for my freelancing job, I use templates from various template clubs and I use large amount of different extensions

    • I'm pretty devoted to Joomla and definitely think it is more than possible to make a living specializing in Joomla. Currently though I'm not full time on my website work yet and end up doing a variety of other business admin and accounts services 60% of the time but hoping to slowly but surely get more of my time committed to websites.
Wasn't sure by what you meant on starting up. Starting up was pretty straight forward for me. Went self employed, worked on a website (still am!) and got a few websites going. I've done a few intranet websites with Joomla which unfortunately does not help me much on the portfolio side since I can't exhibit them, but I have a few live sites up and running, and ongoing projects.
As for themes it really depends on your clients needs and what they want and what ever theme from where-ever will get you to their requirements the quickest! Part of my setup process has been making a few "developer level" and club personal investments into components (social components, blogs, online stores etc) as well as themes. Apart from the above all I can think of for what it takes to start up is time and patience!

    • Time and patience is really crucial to start up your own business. For example, before I started working as RT mod, I did more than 100 projects on Freelancer website. Those were low paid projects because you have to fight with "developers" from India there which will bid for $35 and lower on a project that really cost much more just to get the project. Now, don't get me wrong. I really don't have anything against people from India or any other similar Eastern countries but I had some really bad experience and I worked on a multiple projects that were first hand over to the developers from those countries. The stories are similar among all of them. Service buyers thought that they will get everything done correctly by those guys and that they will get it cheap. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a free lunch. Developers from India usually put something quick and dirty just to satisfy buyers' needs. Once they get paid, you can forget about them. You will never hear from them after that. For example, one service buyer hired me after one such investment because he claimed that his website is not working at all. When I checked what is going on, I realized that Indian guy who was "developing" website before me just put a screenshot of the website on the frontpage. Nothing else. Just a simple screenshot!

So, you see, time and patience is really crucial. You need to learn a lot if you want to be recognized as someone who can be trusted to do a good job. Once you achieve that, jobs will come to you on a regular basis and people will ask you for a help based on a recommendation they get from someone else.

I was working on a website few years ago and it started as occasional fixes here and there. The owner of that website remembered my name and after a few years he contacted me again to do a major redesign and redevelopment of his website. Small job for a few years ago turned into a really big and complex job at the end of last year. Not to mention that this time I was able to charge a lot more for the job and the owner was really satisfied with the price and the final result.

    • Totally agreed with Igor. The low bids from the far east got me down until I realized what was being done or what was not done at all! Wow, a screenshot!!
