Hi Guys,
I've migrated the db over from an older 1.5 site and the new site looks and works ok. However when I enable url rewriting, I get dead links- looking for index.php/ files clicking on any menu item other than the root. I have renamed the file to ".htaccess" and I didn't add anything extra except the apphandler for running PHP 5.3. I did see this as a comment however: # RewriteBase /~dwl/ (dwl s the account name and account directory).
My client's SEO organization is ready to start working, but I'd really like to get this resolved beforehand (if possible).
Is this a problem because I'm using a working directory?

Do you have the .htaccess for the version of Joomla you are currently using?
You should always start out with the default htaccess.txt for the joomla version your using. - Last Edit: 11 years 2 months ago by Joe Halleck.

I just did a copy/paste from the older 1.5 site, making the php 53 change in the top line...I get the exact same results...
any suggestions? - ----

- I would start with a fresh Joomla 2.5 htaccess.txt file. Possible you have a bad edit in the file.

I'm afraid that didn't help either.
I tried using the orig htaccess.txt ( adding "AddHandler application/x-httpd-php53 .php"), and got a 404.
However the 404 now says this (after turning on url rewriting and changing file to .htaccess):
/home/dwl/public_html/index.php was not found on this server.
Not sure what is going on with directories here...would you like me to post the .htaccess file? - ----

Try adding the RewriteBase line back in:
