Joomla php5 and mysql5

  • Joomla php5 and mysql5

    • I am setting up a new server and was going to have CentOS 5 installed but after checking Joomla I am not sure. CentOS 5 has PHP5 and Mysql5 set up on it. After looking around a bit it seems that Joomla does not work well with Mysql 5. Does anybody know anything about this.

      I operate my own Linux servers and are currently running CentOS 4 with PHP5 and mySQL5 and both Joomla and SMF run flawlessly - and I actually updated the server from version 4 of PHP and mySQL without any adverse effects on my sites.

      That said you will need to be careful of your Joomla extensions. Although the core code seems compatible, extensions are all developed differently, so there are no guarantees there.

    • Thanks, I think I am going with Centos 5 on this new server. I am using Centos 4 on miy other servers but I might as well upgrade on this new server and use Php 5 and Mysql 5. I have to some day, anyway and might as well do it.

      As for the extensions I don't hardly use any extensions. I'm scared of them except Rocket theme and Rocket extension. I do use a few Ijoomla extensions but they really seem to understand what they are doing.

      My pleasure Ray. My current servers have been running for a couple of years now when CentOS 4 was the current flavor of Linux, but I wouldn't have thought that the CentOS version would affect PHP or mySQL in any way run on it.

      The next big consideration for CentOS is actually moving to 64bit from 32bit. But for that to be worthwhile the CPU's would need to be true 64bit of course and in particular applications to gain any benefit would need to be compiled for a 64bit environment and also in this context PHP and mySQL.

    • Ironically we were just testing this the other day. Migrating a shared server to php5, mysql 5 as well as apache 2 and suphp. It worked, well :)

      We're running CentOS almost on all our servers now.
