SOLVED Google pagespeed insights - Low score on RT templates!

  • SOLVED Google pagespeed insights - Low score on RT templates!

    • HI,

I am not sure if this is the right section for this. But lately I am trying to get SEO to work better on my sites.

Of course I run an RT template (Salient currently)

I get 55/100 for mobile and 57/100 for desktop

That is with JCH Optimizer, caching etc.

So out of curiosity I ran RocketTheme.com through it.. Turned out to be worse than mine! Check it out:

So I am asking if this is the best we can expect running RT templates?

This 'above the fold' thing is a big deal for Google now. Seems like we are getting penalized by them having cool loooking sites with big images, showcases etc. in the top.

I am wondering if there is a way around this and still have a good looking site?

    • I run Corvus and I have 59/100 as mobile and 56/100 as desktop.
Anyway, I have 99/100 as experience users, I think is this that really matters

    • Yeah I have 99/100 for user experience on Mobile too. But I am not sure if that helps with SEO ranking at all.

    • 1. Rocketheme is not based on G5 ... it's on G4 (wich is slower ... and G5 was really built for speed)
So you are comparing apples and oranges really.
      2. Pagespeed really depends on the content you are using (RT.com has a lot of content).
      3. For me Pagespeed doesn't want to run on our demo at all. So I used Gtmetrix wich is using Pagespeed and Yslow. I tested that with Sailent. (but I even get better results on other templates).

    • Interesting. Thanks for that GTmetrix tip..But I suppose it is like all speed test, you keep testing until you find the one that gives the best results.

Google is the most important after all. GTmetrix and their kind have no bearing on ranks in google. ;)

    • ... that's not the point.
You are wrong about looking at www.rockettheme.com and jumping to conclusions about G5 templates.

Gtmetrics IS using Google "Google pagespeed".

G4 is slow compared to G5. Speed was one of the main reasons for G5.
If your G5 site is slow it's most likely because of cour content/extensions.

I'm building a site on requiem (G5) right now that gets a 76 mobile and 89 desktop ... out of the box on a shared host. I have done nothing about speed right now. No compression at all ...

But I also have G4 sites that have 85 for desktop pages (after htaccess adjustments).

I checked a sailent site you are working on (looking at your forum posts).
      Get's a 84 mobile / 86 desktop on a page... not so bad?
But on your frontpage you are adding too big images in a slideshow. Nothing what a template can fix for you.
You need to set it up right.

But I suppose it is like all speed test, you keep testing until you find the one that gives the best results.
You may want to think about that twice. Do you really think I'm doing that?

    • Sure you can cherry pick a page with just text on it to get bigger numbers.

I don't know what your attitude problem is though? I just posted this as a general topic not a complaint.

I was more interested in hearing from other users and what they have found or done to their sites to get better results and still have images and style..Rather then get lectured on how good RT themes are. Stop selling mate, we already drank the Kool Aid. No need to go on the defensive everytime RT is criticized. We all know nothing is perfect and your templates are no excpetion. Chill out and have a discussion mate.

    • Well for me playing with htacces-rules (GZIP/DEFLATE) and caching (ExpiresByType etc.) made a big differnce on my sites.
Your title for this read "Google pagespeed insights - low score on RT templates!"
Seemed like a complaint about rt-templates to me.(so I got that wrong?)
On the Sailent site you you have too big images. Use tools like png-crunch, jpg-mini etc. to get smaller images.
And btw. ... I'm not selling at all. I don't get paid here.

      Hi Zoran

Well I'm the first to admit that I'm NOT an SEO expert. My main goal is to design creative but yet accessible sites for my clients. For a lot of them they had SEO "experts" that would tweak my design after I handed it off.

What made me want to comment on this Topic is the idea that Google tacitly implies that to get higher rankings on a Google Search results page requires you to have high Google Page Speed scores. As much as this irks me I get that its their system and if you don't want to play you can go elsewhere.

It reminds me of the W3C validation logo heydays that implied that with no W3C logo on your site it was lacking some how. I never used that logo because with the CSS provided by RocketTheme combined with my customizations the sites worked perfectly and my clients in the end didn't care if the logo was there.

Back to Page Speed, so I wanted to see if this Page Speed ranking is so important that how do some of the biggest players, i.e for the Search term they are the first hit, fared in their Page Speed.

So I picked four Search categories: Entertainment, News, Sports and Tech shopping (my fave ;) ). Then I tested them on Google Developers - PageSpeed Insights

      Entertainment: 1st hit - Eonline

So whats the explanation for these Google Search 1st hit results for sites that have such low Page Speed results? For me its part of the Google Developers site where Google has always advised that to be the first result your site must have fresh daily content that has VALUE to the user that searched for that term.

Where Google Page Speed can help you correct some parts of your site that could be optimized there are other more detailed Metrics such as GTmetrix and WebPageTest that can also help.

So paraphrasing Kevin Costner in Field of Dreams "If you build a good site, they will come".
