Is it possible to run multiple sites off Gantry 5 with one backend login

    • Is it possibly to run content for multiple sites off one back end login? and then pick which content is placed on which site? also I would like to have the content agregated on one site...

Ex.. could I use one backend to have a site on apple.com , orange.com, grape.com and then have content from all 3 on fruit.com?

Also would it be better to use Joomla or Wordpress if it is possible?

    • Just remember that for every "site" you will require a site licence even if it is is one installation. There are Joomla extensions that will enable you to do this (e.g. Chameleon, mightysites, multisites).

Personally I think it can get very complicated very quickly if you go down this approach and potentially any mistake that you make can have profound consequences across many sites. On the other hand if you have large amounts of "common" content to share across multiple sites then I can understand why you might want to do do this.

    • mark,

thanks for the reply.. im signed up for a 3 site license and would certainly purxhase additional licenses if required.. i was wondering if you had any feedback on wether joomla or wordpress would be better for this type of site? i am looking at the possibility of doing 2-3 sites to start which some content would aggegate onto one site.. it would also make it easier to display ads across the whole network as well.. thanks!

ive done a bit of searching but i would appreciate some feedback .. i knkw wordpress has a feature called multi site which allows for domain mapping but i am not sure hkw it would affect gantry 5 and how you might pick and choose what to display where

    • I am a Joomla moderator, so obviously am a bit biased on my opinion :)

But you can do much the same in Wordpress too. So really this matter should not drive your choice of CMS. What should drive your choice is your experience with using the CMS, a lot of members struggle switching from one Wordpress to Joomla or vice-versa.

As far as Ads go they're almost certainly provided through a third-party service anyway and any analytics aggregated against the domain name (site) anyway so I don't see that as a reason for trying to share databases between sites.

    • Thanks Mark. I've been with Joomla since it was Mambo and split.. I've never really used wordpress but I was looking at the stats and some comparisons.. Wordpress just seems to be a much larger group.. Really i am looking to aggregate content from more specific sites and have it appear on a more general site without having to re-login and repost the content.. It would be much nicer if I could just check buttons similar to the "feature" button and have the content appear on the appropriate sites.

    • Wordpress does have a greater market share (always has) but it it depends what you want. Nowadays you can do just about everything in wordpress that you can in joomla and vice-versa but their roots are different WP starting out as a blogging tool and Joomla really for forms and database content. Stick with what you are familiar with otherwise you will find it hard and time consuming to transition. You can do what you want with the extensions that I mentioned but I will also add that it's not always straightforward and you are going straight into something complex.
