Migrating Kirigami from J2.5 to 3.6

Posted 7 years 6 months ago
    • I have been planning this for some time, now I am starting it and I see Joomla 3.7 is out and Gantry5.

I was just wondering if i should go 3.7 or stick with 3.6?

Also wondering if all Kirigami extensions are compatable with 2.5 and 3.6 so I can just update them.

Any other migration tips will be greatfully accepted.

    • Gantry 5 is a different framework so will require a change in template - it won't work with Kirigami.

I would counsel against update Joomla to 3.7 for a couple of weeks to let the dust settle - I know some other members are struggling with some issues.

If you want to upgrade from Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.x these are the steps to follow:

      1. backup backup backup!
      2. make sure that you meet the system requirements for J3.x (min php 5.3.10).
      3. check that al RT products are on latest versions (gantry, rt extensions and template) update any that aren't and clear server cache and browser cache. Check that RT template you are using is compatible with Joomla 3.x http://www.rockettheme.com/joomla-templates-compatibility-matrix . You can check all current version numbers in extension manager > manage. Please note if you are using "mission control" admin template that you need to uninstall this by following these special instructions http://www.rockettheme.com/forum/missioncontrol-joomla-admin-template/235181-important-information-about-uninstalling-mission-control .
      4. check all your third-party extensions are up to date and that they are compatible with J3.x
      5. test test test! to make sure anything you updated does still work ok
      6. backup backup backup!
      7. disable "system - remember me" plugin in extension manager > plugins
      8. update to J3.x and clear server and browser cache again.
      9. test test test!
      10. backup backup backup!
      11. re-enable "system - remember me" plugin.

Never doa migration directly on your production site. Clone the site using akeeba backup and akeeba kickstart and make sure everything works smoothly in the migration to J3.6.

      Regards, Mark.

    • Im stuck now and both Gantry and Kirigami say they can not be installed on J2.5.8, despite your comparrison chart showing they can.
Can I upgrade Joomla first and then Gantry and Template?

    • Yes you can. The first step I would take would be to update J2.5.8 to 2.5.28 (latest 2.5 version and make sure everything is good). Then update to j3.x then gantry then template, then rt extensions. Then clear server and browser cache.

It goes without saying that ideally you would do this on a test system first and at least take a backup of the existing site before starting this work.

We do not suport J2.5 anymore at all so that's why the template are no longer compatible - where did you see the statement that says it is btw and I will have that corrected?

      Regards, Mark.

    • Hi MrT, first, thanks a lot for your help.

I have a site with 2.5.28 ( www.kleintone.com ). I did everything as mentioned, and the Joomla Update offered me to go from 2.5.28 to 3.5.1. (enclosed pic).
I hit the install update button, but the site now is broken (also the admin is not working). I think its a database problem.
Could you give me a hand, please?
I also enclose a picture of the error at the index ofo www.kleintone.com .
      Thanks in advance

    • Hi Mr T,

I did everythign you said and followed the process on Joomla docs. All widgets are updates but when I came to update to Joom;la 3/5.1 I got errors.
I asked my host, Siteground, to do it for me and they have also failed.
      This is the response I got from Siteground;

I have tried to update the application several times but to the upgrades failed with the following error:

      Duplicate entry '801' for key 'PRIMARY' SQL=INSERT INTO `#__extensions` (`extension_id`, `name`, `type`, `element`, `folder`, `client_id`, `enabled`, `access`, `protected`, `manifest_cache`, `params`, `custom_data`, `system_data`, `checked_out`, `checked_out_time`, `ordering`, `state`) VALUES (801, 'weblinks', 'package', 'pkg_weblinks', '', 0, 1, 1, 0, '', '', '', '', 0, '0000-00-00 00:00:00', 0, 0);

The error is caused by the fact that the application is trying to add information on row with ID 801 in the _extensions table. However, that ID is already taken and it contains some information about your template. I have tried to deactivate the Weblinks extension ( which seem to be trying to add the information in the database but to no avail.

    • Sorry for the delay on replying - I have been away on holiday.

After you have done the 2.5.8 to 2.5.28 update go to extensions manager > database > press the "FIX" button. Also, do extensions manager > discover > and install anything it finds. Then try again.

      Regards, Mark.
