What future for Gantry and Rocketheme?

Posted 3 weeks 1 day ago
    • I only have a few hours left to wish you a happy new year!

The Gantry framework and Rocketheme templates are excellent tools that are hard to do without.
But we are very worried about the future, no more updates to Gantry for at least 8 months, and it's worse for Rocketheme.
Our favorite framework is no longer evolving, no possibility of Joomla child theme, problems with Fontawesome, no new templates offered in the paid version, RocketTheme offers Christmas promotions at the end of January, 404 errors on the site links, ...

Is there still a pilot in the plane (the rocket)?

Will we have to change Framework in 2025? In any case it risks being very costly, because almost all our sites are made with Gantry, and some very complex by exploiting the performance of the framework.

I am not renewing my subscription (since 2013) to Rocketheme !

    • I don't understand why it is indicated here rockettheme.com/blog/joomla/283-all-gant...onverted-to-joomla-5 that all the Rocketthemes are now updated for Joomla 5 but when looking, for exemple, on the changelog of Versla theme the changelog indicate last change in 2021...?!
      Release Notes - Versla - Version 1.5.0 - 2021-10-29
      Studius 2022...
Are the theme really updated or not?

    • I've been wondering the same for some time. I feel I can no longer use any of the tempaltes here, and have been looking for active replacements - suggestions welcome.

    • It's not easy to find Joomla templates that provide real reliability and maintainability over time and that are modern. Rocketthemes templates have become a bit old even if the Gantry system is powerful.
I left Yootheme for RT because their page builder system makes you captive (it's made for...$), impossible to leave them easily with sites with a lot of pages like big blogs...
Also tried other template providers without being convinced (bugs/unconvincing support/uncertain durability of the project...)
I'm currently looking at simply using Cassiopeia, the native Joomla template that should last at least as long as the Joomla project lasts...But you have to heavily customize the css which is also very very old...
If anyone has any leads for modern and beautiful templates with good usability, after-sales service and durability...

    • If you like open source, developer friendly, flat file (no database!) management, with content and themes that use Twig... basically everything Gantry is, but in a CMS as opposed to a plugin, then definitely check out Grav.

      getgrav.org/

Grav has a premium theme with a user friendly options on top of everything being in Yaml/Twig which is very readable/easy to edit directly

      demo.getgrav.org/typhoon/
      getgrav.org/premium/typhoon/docs

I've personally bailed on Joomla, and use either Grav or WordPress on new Projects.

    • Could you share your reasons for bailing on Joomla? Do you see it as a dying ship or without a solid future compared to Wordpress?

    • I think looking at the Extension Directory speaks volumes, especially compared with what's in the WordPress plugin directory and other 3rd party plugin directories.

The fact most people didn't make the jump from J3 to J4 is another indicator: w3techs.com/technologies/details/cm-joomla

The last graph (google trends) in this article suggests that story was true even going from J2 to J3: www.cminds.com/blog/wordpress/wordpress-...s-market-share-2021/

All of that aside Joomla is still one of the largest well loved open source projects on the planet. No, I don't think it's a dying ship... it's just not my ship. For me, personally, it was a bit of timing thing... Joomla decided that J4 would be a complete rewrite (which hey, sometimes you have to do that) meaning that most J3 plugins would not work beyond J3.10. Many plugin developers decided not to release J4+ versions. So I was faced with having to rebuild a lot of sites anyways (to be clear I maintain about a dozen J3 sites that should be fat and happy for years to come still) and I chose Grav and WordPress as my go-forward platforms.

I use Grav when it's a simple site or a very custom site (Grav is SO developer friendly)... I use WordPress for everything in-between or when a specific functionality best-served by a plugin (ie eCommerce--> WooCommerce) is required.

WordPress, IMO, has a better code base making custom PHP development easier than it is in Joomla. But the biggest thing (which the first thing is a driver for) is the availability of high quality plugins for thousands of different use cases and functionality compared to the dozens (hundreds?) of high-quality plugins available for J4+

    • Hi Shane,
No, Joomla is a very powerful CMS that evolves well.
I use it on large, fairly complex websites. Wordpress would not be able to do a quarter of what Joomla does!
In fact, the subject of this post is that Gantry and Rocketheme templates have not evolved for a few years. Besides, there is no one from Rocketheme on this forum to answer this post.
And the problem is how to change Rocketheme templates installed on advanced sites?
