    • they are definitely the same design, I guess the developers wanted to "kill two birds with one stone" by making people think you can either use it as a news template or a magazine template.

what are you top "news/magazine" templates?

You pretty much only got two different templates for news, ja-teline from joomlart and Times Plazza from Template Plazza, and this is the reason why we would like a news-template from RT. We know you will make a glorious template, and you know we will go all the way for you guys if you release a template for us. And I myself would dance quite naked on your desk if you would please my secret dream. ;)

The Teline from Joomlart isn't the best template for a newssite, but it's pretty much the only alternative you got if you run a newsblog like I do. (Yes, you are allowed to salute my wonderful newsblog for norwegian Mac-users. )

    • ...the color-changing text logo and sections is nice, too. ;) So when you click on sports, for example, the menu item and page style will be red...and so will the matching tabs automatically populating the home page. And the news module that pulls randow content and puts it on the homepage is nice for rotating content...and if I ever figure out how to get the RSS feeds into articles, the site will run itself. ;)

Color changing very important for a news/Magazine:

      Diferents colors menus and sections

Others design styles: (no joomla but styles demos)
      1
      2
      3

    • They are similar but the JA Teline II is much improved in my opinion. The JA Teline II template is the type of template I had in mind when I started the following thread:

      www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?t=33954&rb_v=viewtopic
I list several news sites there to look at as well.

      Joomla News/Magazine examples:
      Ja Teline - Joomlart
      Ja Teline II - Joomlart
      IT Millennium - Icetheme
      IT Newsy - Icetheme
      Nu - YOO Theme
      Modish - Gavick Theme

When I first saw Hyperion, I thought that would be "it" and although its a great theme, after experimenting with it, its not quite the news theme I was wanting.

News themes seem to be really hot right now especially in the WordPress theme world. I'm tempted to purchase one myself.

Side note: Has RT ever considered making WordPress themes? That is probably a controversial idea but the RT Team would absolutely rock the WordPress theme world. I think there is big potential for RT there and after studying numerous CMS solutions for the last 6 - 8 months, WordPress is really not that bad. It certainly cant do everything Joomla can but has its advantages in some areas. Besides, it looks like there is room for a WordPress button right next to the Joomla Button on the RT home page. ;)

Check this link out for a good overview of News & Magazine templates in the WordPress world:

    • Could someone explain to me just what it is that makes a news template a news template? ???

I would think that any number of RT templates could be adapted to be a slick news site.

    • I'll take a shot at it starting from the top down.

Centered fixed adjustable width theme. Theme would provide the developer ability to specify overall width, individual width of column at right content area and width of two or more columns within the main left content area below lead story.

      HEADER AREA:
      Place for Logo (Float Left)
Date, Time, Login, RSS, Search, etc (Float Right)
      Adjustable header height
      Place for 468X60 ad
Possibly a drop down member login like Catalyst

      TOP HORIZONTAL NAVIGATION
Tabbed main navigation below header with drop, split, moo or suckerfish option. Tabs customizable in size, font and hover state (custom backgrounds or color). Would be used for main categories, i.e. World News, Sports, Health, Travel, Tech, etc.

CONTENT LEFT COLUMN - LEAD STORY TOP LEFT
Two different options would be available to the theme:

Option1: One very large photo with lead story text underneath it. Story and text would auto rotate/slide/dissolve amongst 3-5 lead stories. Lead title linkable to main story. Could consider making this area tabbed as well.
      Similar to this idea:
      gazette.premiumnewstheme.com/

Option 2: Large photo with lead story (would still auto rotate) but with several other thumbnail featured stories.
Similar to this idea but with RT approach:
      www.joomlart.com/templates_demo.php?template=ja_teline_ii

      CONTENT LEFT COLUMN - CATEGORIES
Similar to both of the templates mentioned above. Theme user could choose to show as many and which categories as they desire.

CONTENT LEFT COLUMN - BELOW CATEGORIES
Perhaps another advertising area or several modules available.

      CONTENT RIGHT COLUMN
      Some Ideas:
Featured Video (Youtube capability a must!)
      Photo Gallery
      Recent Stories
      Popular Stories
      Archived Stories
      Hot Topics
      Comments
      Weather Display
300 pixel wide advertisements (industry standard)

      FOOTER
      The typical stuff

      MISC
Many news sites will run a industry standard 728 x 90 Leaderboard ad above their header area. Perhaps a collapsible module here so theme user could choose to run one if wanted.

Lots of white space. Less candy, more business, faint gray lines (HiveMind Approach) Multiple color (highlight) choices available but with a Dark version as well. Build so that color preferences are easily changed via CSS or color selector like Chromatophore.

Theme would offer the latest RT modules and Plugins available.
      RokContentRotator
      Integrated RokSlide Tabbed Modules
      RokHeadRotator
      RokNewsRotator
      RokNewsFlash
      RokMediaScroller

Designed with advertising in mind, hopefully providing sections that would allow for standard ad format sizes for Google
      www.google.com/adsense/static/en_US/AdFormats.html

Large amount of module positions, large amount of module variations.

That's not asking for much is it?
      :)

    • I think simplicity is the key, but a news site is quite complicated under the hook; look at any major news site and it almost looks too easy...spacial design is complex, though. ;) And the color-coordinated sections that change text logo color, menu item color, read more color, et al, is nice.

Sure, I could style user 1 to be red and use it for my featured sports article on the home page, then rotate it out as time permits and try to manage all the other featured articles, but when if you are able to bring in RSS feeds as content items/articles, then it could become difficult to manage quite quickly.

But I chose the Teline II because of the color-coding and the news rotator myself. :) I just have to create a new article, save it, and the template news system does the rest...write it and forget it. ;)

    • Teline II appealed to me for several of those reasons as well but the big thing that initially caught my attention was a certain balance to the design. Guess I lean towards grid based design when it comes to a news themes.
