Any 'ol widgets work in Joomla?

  • Any 'ol widgets work in Joomla?

    • Will widgets you find for "regular" websites work in the Joomla structure? Like the Google widgets and Yahoo ones. Or do they have to be strictly Joomla extensions? I'm looking for a few things and can't find ones I like for everything in the Joomla extension directory.

      Thanks!

    • I think that you will have to be more specific about what kind of widgets that you are talking about Shannon.

      As for the link that you provided, I see that it works with Joomla 1.5.x but I cannot say if it would be useful for you or not.

    • I would like to add a weather widget and I don't like the ones I've seen in Joomla extensions for 1.5. I've seen some that you can get the html for to add to your page like from AccuWeather or weatherunderground that are better but they don't mention compatibility with Joomla. I also want a movie times widget. I really want one from pollen.com showing current pollen counts but their widgets are more for desktop use. Can that be re-worked into a Joomla compatibile module? And I'd also like to know if the google widgets or yahoo widgets can be worked into Joomla modules.

      Thanks so much, Roland!

    • Well Shannon I can tell you that I have used the code supplied by Environment Canada in the past to put a weather module on a web site - sooo, if you have some html for weather just give it a try in a custom module. Some of the weather widgets that I've seen include a pollen count feature, but not all.

      If you can provide a link to the google/ yahoo widgets in question, I can have a look.

      Cheers

    • Thanks, Roland.

      I'm trying to use the 'weather on your website' html code from weather.com and also the media feed from TexasGasPrices.com.

      I made all my choices and preferences and got the html code.
      Went to modules and tried to create a new one. I chose 'custom html' and then in the wysiwyg editor I tried pasting the code into html mode and when that didn't work, I tried pasting it in regular mode like weather.com suggests.

      Can these be made to work in Joomla? Thanks soooo much!!

    • Shannon,

      Try pasting the code into a custom module with your editor turned off or configured here:

      Many of those little do dads will work because you can put html into a custom module. Just need to make sure your editor doesn't strip away parts of the code you paste in.

    • Thanks, Mike.

      I was hoping it would work but something is still wrong. I did as you said and turned off the clean code option.

      I tried the weather.com code below:
      Since I turned that thing off, this appears at the top automatically when I go to html mode:
      <P> </P> so that's there and then I C&P'd the code below from weather.com. They say to not paste it into html mode but plain text mode. I tried it both ways. In plain text mode, it just puts all that code on the site. In html mode, it puts the link to weather.com but there is no image/widget.

      <div id="wx_module_1487">
      <a href=" www.weather.com/weather/local/76710 ">Waco Weather Forecast, TX (76710)</a>
      </div>

      <script type="text/javascript">

      /* Locations can be edited manually by updating 'wx_locID' below. Please also update */
      /* the location name and link in the above div (wx_module) to reflect any changes made. */
      var wx_locID = '76710';

      /* If you are editing locations manually and are adding multiple modules to one page, each */
      /* module must have a unique div id. Please append a unique # to the div above, as well */
      /* as the one referenced just below. If you use the builder to create individual modules */
      /* you will not need to edit these parameters. */
      var wx_targetDiv = 'wx_module_1487';

      /* Please do not change the configuration value [wx_config] manually - your module */
      /* will no longer function if you do. If at any time you wish to modify this */
      /* configuration please use the graphical configuration tool found at */
      /* registration.weather.com/ursa/wow/step2 */
      var wx_config='SZ=300x250*WX=FHW*LNK=HNWL*UNT=F*BGI=clouds*MAP=null|null*DN=iparentwaco.com*TIER=0*PID=1066553816*MD5=f112630084c07959ff9ae2bcce556e09';

      document.write('<scr'+'ipt src="'+document.location.protocol+'//wow.weather.com/weather/wow/module/'+wx_locID+'?config='+wx_config+'&proto='+document.location.protocol+'&target='+wx_targetDiv+'"></scr'+'ipt>');
      </script>

    • Deleted this message. I got my Texas Gas Prices to show up but it's just too big to fit on the front page. I was asking how to size the custom module because no matter where I stuck it, it was too big for the module. I've decided to just make little link square on front page and make a section out of the gas stuff and put it seperately.

    • Any chance that site has an rss feed that you could pull info from Shannon?
