Changing Homepage from Frontpage Layout to Cat-Blog Layout

I'm currently re-evaluating our Articles page, which is now a category blog layout. The trouble is that by its very nature, a cat/blog layout will only display articles from ONE category, while I'd like the flexibility of choosing articles from any section/category (like in the Front Page blog layout) to display on the Articles page. Can I easily change our homepage (where the articles are not going to change) to a cat/blog layout and make the Articles page (where I want to frequently change what articles are featured) a Front Page layout without screwing anything up? If so, do I just change the type on each and then make the appropriate assignments on a category and then article level?
We're using Joomla! 1.5.7 and the template is Chromatophore with some Catalyst, Hyperion and Media Mogul thrown in. Apparently, I'm a glutton for punishment. :

Well, I guess I'll just give it a shot and see how it goes. I'll report back what I find. In the meantime, if anyone has any words of advice, I'm all ears!
