I didn’t have that HO WOW! effect for a while... Ready to help in the process...

Maybe, I’m just a grumpy old designer......

There's not really much room left for innovation re: Joomla templates, think of how much functionality has been added over the years (ajax search, fusion menu, smartload, etc). Once template features reach critical mass (can't jam too many more features in there), what else is left in a gantry (fixed modules positions) template, other than color schemes, main menu layouts and module variations?

Given the above, the whole 'getting excited for the next template' makes little sense, because all you're getting geared up for is the same basic template with new color schemes, main menu layouts and module variations (not RT's fault, just landscape evolution, IMO).

Wow. That's a pretty claustrophobic outlook.

People said similar things when Macromedia Flash was rocking the scene. My bet is that both the Joomla! world and the Internet would not be recognizable to a person who rode his flux capacitor-driven DeLorean from today on to 10 years into the future.

Having lived to witness the innovation that has occurred in the last decade, I have great expectations for the near future. If Joomla! templates do not innovate along with the rest of the Internet world, then Joomla! will not continue to exist.

    • I’m not talking about feature here
Dont take me wrong here, you guys are good but as a designer I look less for already onboard feature — most of the time I never use a template the way you present it.

My design process is like this:

I look what my customer need for a web site and I compose a look and feel of what he need — I go on Rocket take a template that can be easy to customize to fit my need and I work the template to be exactly what I design at first. Meaning that most of the time I completly rework the positions — css and all to do what was in my mind at first —

I will use whatever modules composant (rocket or not) to have the exact feature I need...

In other words I deconstruct what you do to redo it my way... no compromise

What i really like to see is some templates that will bring total flexibility to create whatever a designer will dream of for a client.

I understand that you need to have full featured templates for people that want a fast site.

But think at the real designers out there that don’t want a “template” but a canvas that they can model to their liking. You should have one or two template like that by year —

I have tons of Ideas to do so — as I already do it — and Gantry is just the right framework to do so....

I will come back to you to explain

I hope you do come back to explain, because it sounds like you are dissatisfied but can't explain what it is exactly that you want.

The nature of Gantry already makes every template completely flexible. If there are color adjustments you want, many Gantry templates have color choosers. Those that don't can easily be changed via css.

I stand by my opinion that these templates are already feature packed and totally customizable, and there isn't much room for much more innovation, outside of module variations, color schemes and top menu layouts.

So, people getting all hyped up for the latest release are wasting their time, expecting some major shift in the design universe with the next release – not gonna happen.

Those who find something lacking but can't explain what exactly they think is missing supports that argument. What's lacking? Can't explain it? I see... :)

Look back on the history of online web tech:

Once upon a time blogging technology was innovative. Then it became ubiquitous. Then CMS technology popped in, then came directory plugins, social networking components, and so on...

Now everyone and their grandma can make their own slick social networking home-made Facebook with a couple paid components and a pro template.

Newsflash: Joomla will not exist ten years from now, because the CMS concept will long be redundant, as the internet continues to evolve.

So, if you're banking on Joomla being any more than it is, or RT continuing to run a business by selling web templates a decade from now, I think that's a pretty claustrophobic view as well.

    • The point that some are trying to make here is that the new template (and a few others recently) haven't really been anything new. Maybe at the pace of every other month one tiny new bell or whistle is added.

The point about blogging then and now is well taken and I think about that a lot.

The question is then, if there is nothing new to present then why do we pay for a monthly template club that made its name by coming up with innovative and attractively DESIGNED templates that can be manipulated with CSS and a little Photoshop/Fireworks work? Not zipped CSS and Gantry controlled "RT-Block" CSS permeating everything.

This thread itself is a testament to that fact. It used to be buzzing for days with anticipation and everyone would exclaim WOW! upon the release. Now its "ho-hum, a new template" 10 or so posts a month.

Rockettheme has been too interested in Ganty, Wordpress, Drupal, Magento and whatever other revenue streams they can come up with, and they have lost a lot of their WOW factor for pure design. Their business model is obviously shifting from designer/developer focus to end user focus. So much for dancin' with who brought ya.

    • Mr. FutureGuy, please let me repeat something from my earlier post. Your reply indicates that you did not read it.

I’m not dissatisfied, Gantry is really cool and you guys doing really good quality work. This is the reason that keep me here for many years now.
      Look at this —> www.neurofeedbackmontreal.com/

This is a Zephyr template with complete new positions for the header/logo and bottom — All or most of those position are available for module — I can use whatever I want or not. Size it the way I want — I keep the body almost untouch — Just add image for the page background. The header here is extremly flexible on what I can acheive, just playing with size or turning off and on the corresponding module in the admin. I add css and png to have complete control of body transparence (Dark and Light)

I rebranch many control in the template manager to have separate control on links color, Text colors, modules header and many more aspect to have more control on the overall design.

I understand that type of template is not for everybody,,, But, some of your user will be probably interested in a lean and flexible template that will be able to morph easily to adapt to whatever is needed.
