You can always try to make Joomla make less DB queries. That will speed things up but i consider that to be more "hardcore" stuff...
If your site depends on fast response times then you will need something like this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akamai_Technologies
Sorry, i don't know any easy solution to your problem. You can always switch host, but... all hosts has a drawback somewhere

Hey prim,
Just so I'm clear (not always the case!) it is the "site does nothing for 30 seconds, then loads all at once" issue that is the main concern vs loading slowly once it starts. I'm not sure if that makes a difference....
Sometimes it just doesn't load at all no matter what--seems to go in cycles--for a while it won't load, then it will load quickly, then it will load very slowly--

When viewing your site i have a 4-5 seconds lag before the site loads. If the issue is NOT peering then i'm all ears how to speed up my own sites
