As a beginner who is trying to learn the concepts and the 'how to's' of Joomla and templates, I wonder if the book 'Joomla Magic' and the accompanying videos would help me to learn and understand more quickly?
Does anyone recommend this?

Haven't read that book but some friends recommended this book: Joomla - A User's Guide by Barrie M. North...

I picked up this book when I was getting started. You learn a lot of info just thumbing through the pages. Explains most all the basic questions you may have and then some.
Its enough to get you going... I've found the best way to learn is just to dive in.
