Using Rocket Launcher on Existing Site

  • Using Rocket Launcher on Existing Site

    • Hey Everybody. I am just beginning to get into the in's and outs of Joomla. After playing around with the various templates I have come to see that it is always best for folks like me to use the "Rocket Launcher Feature".

My question is can you use Rocket Launcher over an existing site without compromising the sites database and the site?

I'm not super well versed in JOOMLA! but if you think its possible I'll give it a try!

      Thanks!

    • you probably want to export your sql-DB and then import it after install.

    • Any idea of an easy way to do that?

    • There is no easy way, if you have existing site you need/have to backup your database table structure, note any extensions you have installed, run Rocket Launcher than import DB after install.

I strongly suggest you backup your site and try this on a test domain or localhost before you try it on a live site.

    • Use JoomlaPack to backup your site + database :)

    • So- in my understanding this is what I would do (and I will try this on a test domain prior to actually doing it)

1- Back Up site using Joomlapack (I already use that so thats easy)
2- Upload Rocket Launcher/Run Rocket Launcher
3- Link up New Intstall with same database as I used on site before redoing it
      4- Re-install all extensions

      Is this right?

    • Yep! :)

"3- Link up New Intstall with same database as I used on site before redoing it"

If you use the same table prefix as the old install then the Rocketlauncher will overwrite the old content and you will get a fresh install. It's up to you if you want to use the old SQL data :)

    • The other thing which was mentioned.. Try doing this on a test site if you can. Create a sub folder or such to do it all in. If you break something, better it to be where everyone can't see.

    • Thanks for the advice- it still sounds a bit over my head- haha- i use Siteground Hosting w/ the CPanel and some of this just feels a bit advanced for me...it may be best for me to just try to manually do the transfer..

    • The table prefix is easily managed as you will have to enter it during the Joomla installation. Look for table prefix: jos somewhere during the installation :)

And you can always setup a site locally with MAMP or similar. Then you will not break anything in public =)
