Tricky Menu Situation

    • I created a Category Blog menu item and formatted it to not display the Category Description nor the Category Title.

I then took the relative link for the menu item and used it in a module to link back to that page.
      index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=37&Itemid=413

The client does not want drop down menu items so I disabled the menu item and they use the link through the module to redirect to that particular menu item.

When I have the menu item enabled it appears like we expect with the Category Articles one after the other, when I disable the menu item it still shows up but now displays the Category Title and Description. I have used this technique successfully before but for some reason it is not working now.

What am I overlooking? Any suggestions?

Click Answers to Big Questions on the Right Sidebar (which has the menu item active) and it looks fine.

Click Just Ask Andie! on the Left Sidebar (which has the menu item disabled/hidden) and it displays the Category Title and Description as well as the following blog items.

    • Let me answer this for myself. It appears to be better to create a separate menu (hidden) where you can keep the menu items active. Especially when it comes to Category List Layout and Category Blog Layout. Hope this might help someone else in the future.

    • Good idea, works well, I've done this myself a few times.

    • Okay, I will try to elaborate ... and I hope this makes sense. If not keep asking and I will try to answer as best I can.

If you wish to have menus that remain hidden from the general public, but still are used to control the layout of the page instead make the menu items under a separate menu.

      For example ...
Create a new menu called hiddenmenu
Then created your menu items under that menu

Your menu items will remain active and you can leave them on so not to BUST any modules that may be linked to them.

What I was doing was making manual links to the articles or categories and referencing the menu ID, but I would disable the menu item so it wouldn't show up in the menu dropdown list (client didn't want this) and then when I had to add a module to a new page, I would lose the modules on the disabled pages unless I enabled all of them (found this out by making the mistake a few times).

So eventually (after banging my ahead against the wall too many times) I accidentally figured out I could MOVE those menu items into a different (new) menu and they could stay enabled all the times so I didn't lose any module settings, yet were not visible to viewers/visitors.

Hope I didn't muddy that up too much.

      Paul
