    Database Names

Posted 16 years 1 month ago
    • Is there a database naming convention that is typically used with Joomla? For example, is the database name typically based on the website name? I know that most hosting companies will proceed the database name with some sort of prefix.

Since I'm creating many sites and databases, I would like to use some sort of standard that is easily to manage and remember. There are plenty of naming recommendations in the Microsoft and Oracle world, but I can't seem to find much info with Joomla. I would also be curious to know how RT names their databases. Thanks.

    • Hello,

There is no typical database name for Joomla. You can use any name for your database. The default prefix for the joomla database is "jos_".

    • Thanks. I understand that I can use any name, but I suspect there has to be some sort of convention or best practice. For example, jos_websitename_joomla, jos_websitename, etc. I was just curious.

      Hello,

jos_ is the "table prefix", it's not the "database name"

I am not sure there is a convention for the database name, but like you mentioned before, something like "sitenamedb" would be nice to remember if you have a lot of databases

    • 'Joomla' doesn't care what you name your database, but your host might.

For example, on one host I use, I can use underscores '_' and dashes '-', on another I can't.

As Arifin suggested, try to name your databases with a name that has some meaning to you.

For example, 'site' for your site, 'forum' for your forum, 'test_site' or 'testsite' for a test site ou might want to use, etc.
