VirtueMart Support (besides from VirtueMart)

    • Ok. After considering using a different ecommerce backend because of the horrible forum I've (never) received from VirtueMart I find myself yet again drawn to it because SO many people love it, live it, breathe it, and say it's great. And so far.. it is pretty awesome. There are a few things I can't do, but getting support from VM is like pulling teeth. Forum posts go weeks with no response at all.

So, in I turn here in earnest hope that one of you geniuses has a better idea for VM support. Yes, I know this isn't a VM forum, but it's about the best forum I've ever seen for answering questions related to ANYTHING Joomla.

So, where do you all go for VM support? What supercool web site am I missing that you all use for VM issues?

      Thanks again,

      Tommy

    • I use GOOGLE and the search feature on the VM forum.

Seems like they're less tolerant when it come to answering the same question over and over when it's already been solved.

I post only as a last resort.

    • I completely agree about your comment about being less tolerant on repeated issues. Unfortunately it seemed to me that I was asking questions that never got answered when any of the OTHER 300 people asked them, so I asked in a fresh post rather than adding to a two year old thread that had no others. Or course I had the same luck... no repsonses to my questions. Just seems very frustrating. I understand it's freeware so I can't really complain. I'm just looking for another answer somewhere if there's any to be had.

    • I must confess it raises an intersting gremlin, probably more so for the RT team than anything else. How do the folks at RT ensure that people can make best use of a thier offerings if they come with VM templates and integration ?

The way the templates work now does lend itself to the 'functional quad' (phpBb3, VM, RT and Joomla) - but it does have the potential for grey areas in support terms.

I think the biggest issues with VM forums, is the Signal to Noise ratio they have - in all fairness to them, I woudl hate to have to try to moderate and support those boards!

Perhaps the solution would be to have a VM subforum on here ? Make it clear that RT do not support VM 'per se', but provide an enviroment where the community here can support each other in thier efforts ? (of course that doesnt stop the dev's and mod's from answering queries, but perhaps it shoudlnt be expected!).

As an example, I currently have two VM issues - I am lucky, I have one of the mods looking at one of the issues via pm atm (although I did go out of my way to provide all of the information in a clear format), but as to the other - it only occours when I use vm_mynxx, within Peirhelion.

Now, I cant go to the VM boards with the issue, as I now know it does not occour on the default template, the Perihelion forum would not quite seem correct as its a VM template. Yet the Mynxx forum (currently being used), is - well, for Mynxx.

It crosses my mind that such a community driven subforum might also help with these 'grey areas'

      Mizpah

PS: And we all know that demand for VM wont suddenly dissapear - its a great product, and coupled with RT provides a host of options - but it *is* (for RT and users) a potential suport nightmare!
    • Currently trying to persuade the following to play nicely;

      Joomla 1.5.10
      Virtuemart 1.1.3
      Perihelion Template
      vm_mynxx virtuemart template

      Website (in progress); jobeky.myzen.co.uk

    • Mizpah,
You said it all right there. I don't usually try to come here to post questions unless it's just about the theme itself, but I pretty much ONLY use RT themes and I only use VM ecommerce (at the moment) so VM won't answer the questions because they don't understand any questions that aren't about vanilla installations, hence the circle of confusion I'm in right now.

I'd LOVE to see a VM subforum on here, especially because I'd love to start playing with some of these VM integrated templates RT has to offer, but I'm frustrated with VM support. So... I guess count this as a Second to Mizpah's motion... all in favor?

We already get tons of VM questions here, I think adding a forum would 'open the flood gates'.

If VM comes with a template, of course we should support VM in that template for that theme.

Mizpah, I've seen what your doing with the Perihelion & VM Mynxx.

Your fortunate that Pete's been able to give you a hand, but I think it would be impractical or unfair to assume that RT could help a hundred or so members get a VM template to work in a template it's not designed for.

We have a lot of tutorials and guides for getting RT components or features incorporated from on RT template to the next, RokMiniNews, RokBox login, RokAjax search, etc, but the VM themes are themes, no components which make it an entirely different ball game.

    • Perfect reason for a VM forum:
"it would be impractical or unfair to assume that RT could help a hundred or so members get a VM template to work in a template it's not designed for." What templates are specifically NOT designed for VM? I'm using it in Versatilty 4 right now and I hope there's no reasons I shouldn't be. Seems to be working well so far, but it's only in the first stages.

But things like that right there are some of the things us "lesser" programmers (I hate admitting that) could definitely find useful. And as a second thought, I can ALWAYS find just about any answer here to just about any questions I have, or at least have one of these other members point me in the right direction, but "taking the time" as was mentioned, to search through 146195 Posts in 38537 Topics- by 38668 Members, most of which are unanswered posts just kills hours of my day and rarely seems to provide me with the answer.

Anyway, I don't want to start a mess on the RT forums. I know they're for RT support and VM isn't a RT product. I just wanted to know if there was another good RT source out there that WAS useful because I've found the VM forums to be mostly junk and VERY poorly moderated.

(Somewhere in there was a good RTVM joke, but I couldn't quite make it...)

    • What templates are specifically NOT designed for VM?

You can use VM in any RT template or any Joomla template for that matter.

The 'trick' is getting it it to look good.

      But you've missed the point:

"It would be impractical or unfair to assume that RT could help a hundred or so members get a VM template to work in a template it's not designed for."

      Mynxx Virtuemart Theme
In order for Mynxx to integrate as seamlessly as it does, a separate Virtuemart theme had to be created, alongside the typical joomla template. This is made possible due to the newest versions of Virtuemart offering a templating capacity which has allowed us much greater access to the theming core of Virtuemart, perfect for creating a Virtuemart specific templates without messy javascript hacks.

It's a separate theme designed for a specific template, so if you install it in another template, it's not going to match perfectly.

As far as taking time, we often go to the VM forum and spend 5 or 10 minutes searching through 146195 Posts in 38537 Topics- by 38668 Members.

Just this week I've spent at least an hour over there, granted you can't always find the answer, but more importantly, it takes time away from answering questions here.

    • Hi JEM and others,

Firstly thanks for the reply, I am the first to conceed that you shoudn't be spending your support overhead on VM directly - afer all you are RT! However the intent was that by having a VM subforum the community here could help to support itself - in the way that Ive only seen the RT community do!

To elaborate on the comments above about Peter helping out - this illustrates the case in point. Peter has confirmed that my checkout and subcategory issues do not occour in the default Joomla template, but do in Perihelion (I am convinced I tried that, but probably missed somthing inamongst other changes!) - now whilst he offered to look at it when he has more time (and I am very genuinely, very greatfull to him) it makes me wonder where I should look to in the interim as I need to get this basic functionality working for a meeting tommorow :P

So if I need to post a query on these boards about vm_mynxx in Perihelion, where (structurally) should I be posting it ?

    • Hi Mizpah,

      Thanks for your concern. :D

This happens a lot, not only for VM but for countless 3rd party components and the Joomla core as well.

While you on the boards, I'm sure you'll see lots of posts from the moderators linking posts to various forums with answers to questions that have already been answered previously here, there, and everywhere... :D (We find these answers simply by searching! )

Along with posting answers to what we know, we spend a considerable amount of time researching resolution to problems we don't have answers to. Many times regardless of the fact that they are not RT template related.

What I'm afraid of is while RT moves forward to offer matching e-commerce templating, if a sub-forum is created for said solution, it will be filled with unanswered posts. Not because we don't want to answer, or provide solutions, but because of the variables involved.

I an using Template A and I want to incorporate the VM theme from Template B.
I an using Template B and I want to incorporate the VM theme from Template C.
I an using Template C and I want to incorporate the VM theme from Template D.
I an using Template D and I want to incorporate the VM theme from Template E.

This is the problem we are facing now, with just one user....

And as far as users supporting users, I don't see that happening.

(My opinion as a moderator, not a member of the staff.)

This is made possible due to the newest versions of Virtuemart offering a templating capacity which has allowed us much greater access to the theming core of Virtuemart, perfect for creating a Virtuemart specific templates without messy javascript hacks.

Simply put, the skills the moderators here have is versed, but even still, to have a moderator here that is skilled in RT templates and templating VM themes, let alone an average member, with all the variables involved, I don't think things would pan out as you imagine.

As far as where to post, you can leave your post in the Perihelion forum, and perhaps post in the Mynxx forum with a link to the related threads.

But for this issue, I think Pete is your best bet, he's the resident VM guru.

      Cheers!! :D
