EDIT: This information has now been superseded and is obsolete. If you want to upgrade a template or extension just install it in extension manager (no need to uninstall first). In fact, if you were to uninstall first you would lose your settings associated with the template. Similarly if you were to uninstall an extension you would lose all settings associated with it AND any modules that used it.

How to Upgrade a Template
Everyone knows how to upgrade Joomla, right?

But what about the template, when it changes from 1.5.0 to 1.5.1, etc?
Download the latest version of the template, the template file, not the Rocket Launcher.
Backup your existing template with an FTP client.
If you have made any changes, you can copy & paste what you need after the upgrade.
In the Template Manager, assign another template as default, for example, beez or rhuk_milkyway.
Uninstall the current RT template that you want to upgrade.
Install the latest version and assign it as default.

Remember, your logo is in the template folder, so one of the first things you'll have to do is upload you're logo from the backup you created.
Another alternative for upgrading the template:
Backup your existing template with an FTP client.
Extract the new template file you've downloaded.
It's a tgz file, so you'll need a 3rd party program like 7Zip - www.7-zip.org/
Upload the template files to the proper template directory.
This will overwrite the template files with the new ones, but your logo will still be there..... - Last Edit: 10 years 7 months ago by MrT.

Do you also have a tutorial for how to upgrade to the latest template + joomla version? I am currently running a 1.0 based Versatility III template and want to upgrade to the latest Joomla AND Rockettheme template version.

Hi Jem, if this is done in windows, the linux file attributes (if any, such as executable, readable, writable, etc) will be reset to windows defaults. Would that cause any problems?

1. Is this as simple as a recursive copy of the whole directory structure from the template name on down?
such as
/usr/share/joomla15/templates/rt_crystalline
2. What about when there is also a version change of Gantry? I haven't found the gantry template or extension on the back end, and am not sure about the filesystem.
