    Nobody answered my question!

    • Nobody answered my question!

Just a couple tips to move your question up the queue…

If your question falls into one of these categories it may take a while to get answered…

(There are others but let’s focus on these for now…)

      1. It’s posted in the wrong place, e.g., the solved boards.

When we look for unanswered posts we may catch it as an unanswered post, but it may go unnoticed. Though the solved boards are not the only place your post may get lost, it’s the place it most likely will.

      2. It’s posted in a thread marked solved.

When we look for new posts, if you’ve posted in a solved thread, it will show up in the queue but since the thread is marked solved, there’s no way of knowing that there is a new post there with a question.

The purpose of marking threads solved it twofold, it benefits the members because solved threads are a great resource, and when a post is marked ‘solved’ a moderator can ‘skip’ that post in the queue and move on to topics that are still open.

Also note, once a thread is solved; it may be unsubscribed to by the people that were watching it, so a moderator (or member) that maybe able to help will not receive notification.

      3. Multiple questions on different topics in the same thread.

You ask a question, receive a reply, and then ask another question.

This happens all the time and honestly it’s a good way to do things; getting multiple issues solved while a moderator (or member) is still subscribed to a particular thread.

This is not the end of the world, and I’m not advising anyone not to do so, but you set yourself up with potential ‘roadblocks’ or ‘dead ends’.

While some moderators or team members may be able to answer every single topic, not every moderator can answer every single topic. Andy has done a great job selecting moderators with diverse experience with Joomla and all the stuff that goes along with it and chance are, someone will be able to answer you question but….

Basically moderators (or members) look at topics based on the original topic title.

      Roadblocks:

Your original topic contains a subject that a moderator is unfamiliar with.

[A moderator (or member) may skip the post knowing that they won’t be able to answer it, wait until it’s solved and then go back to see what was done. After that, they’ll know what to do, or at least provide a link to a solved thread.]

Your subsequent questions are subjects that the moderator (or member) is familiar with but based on your original topic title, the moderator (or member) doesn’t look at the post.

      Dead ends:

Conversely, your original topic contains a subject that a moderator is familiar with.

The moderator (or member) answers your question.

Your subsequent questions are subjects that the moderator (or member) is unfamiliar with but based on your original topic title, other moderators (or members) don’t look at the post.

The moderator (or member) may try to help you resolve you subsequent problem but it’s not until a dead end is reached that other moderators are notified.

So, if a subsequent issue is not really related to the original topic, you may be better off starting a new thread with a proper title describing your issue so the moderators (or members) that are familiar with the problem can take notice.

As always, following the Top Tips for Support by James S! is the best way to start off your posts.

    • Also note, as mentioned by Kat05....

If you make a new topic and post, then realize you needed to add more information and post a reply to that topic, it will no longer show up as an 'unanswered post', because by posting additional information as a reply, you've answered the post....

      Tricky, isn't it!

Best bet is to EDIT the original post..... so it remains unanswered in the queue....

      Thanks, Kat05!!

    • Other points to consider....

I just wanted to post a general observation and does not really pertain to this thread or any other particular "no support" thread. Most questions that go unresolved or unanswered are related to people trying to do things that are not directly supported by the template. These things usually involve changing the layout or behavior of a particular part of a template. Most people who are new to web development and specifically XHTML and CSS, usually think that what they have in mind is a simple change, and don't realize quite what is involved in making it happen. This is not RT's fault, it's the XHTML and CSS specifications that define the rules. This stuff is not trivial, that's why we've gone to great lengths to make as many things as customizable and configurable from the admin as possible. If you are fairly knowledgeable in these technologies, then you probably will have no problem making changes as you realize that everything you do has trickle-down consequences to other areas of the layout as well as an impact for other browsers.

Most support threads take two forms, the first is a legitimate bug. Any bug or issue with a template or configuration you will find quickly resolved by our moderators. Those are always given top priority. The second form is anything related to customizing, custom code, or general modification outside the bounds of the regular design, is going to get less attention. Those usually require alot more work on the moderators part, and frankly are answered as a courtesy to help people understand what's involved in the changes they are asking for. The vast majority of people who complain or have issues about the lack of support are asking the second type of question.

Another way to get good support, is to be polite when asking, be thankful when helped, and in general be polite and considerate to the moderators. Moderators are people too, so if you insult them, or are generally rude in your communications, the help you receive is not going to be as good as if you were better behaved. This is just common sense, and good web etiquette.

Like I said, this is not directed at the author of this thread, or anyone in particular, just general observations.

Never thought about this. Good point. Having already replied to a thread I start that nagging the life out of me, is frowned upon? >> index.php?f=15&t=104670&rb_v=viewtopic

Also, what's the best way to request a thread be moved without PM'ing mods?

If you need a post moved, you can PM one of us and we'll move it.
