argg Im stupid! How to create a menu

Posted 18 years 5 months ago
    • Eek!

I cannot work out how to make a new menu.

Example I want a menu to show up on left side and in that menu to have links, like admins, server info, maps, etc
and when any of those links are clicked then it opens in the same window of content I add to it.

I dont know how to do it.

Every time I go to menu manger it always wants to link my menu to some catergory thats already there and thats definitely not what I am trying to accomplish.

I read through joomla site about menus but it didnt make sense to me.

    • If I correctly understand what you want to do:

Login to the Admin backend, choose Menu/ Menu Manager.
In the Menu Manager screen click New.

Give the new menu a Menu Name and a Module Title - for example:
      Menu Name: Links
      Module Title: Links

      Click Save.

Now on the Joomla Admin Menu (top) choose Modules/ Site Modules.
In the Site Modules screen choose the Links module (the Menu that you had just created).
In the Links Module Edit screen choose to have a title or not, the Position (Left in your case), Access Level, and ensure that the Menu is Published. On the right hand side you can choose which pages to have this module displayed on, the default is All - you can choose multiple pages by holding the Ctrl key down when selecting.
There are other options that you can explore, any queries feel free to post.
      Click Save.

Now on the Joomla Admin Menu (top) choose Menu/ Links.
In the Links Menu Manager area click New.
In the New Menu Item screen choose:
      Link URL (bottom right side)

      Click Next (top right).
Give your new link a Name, input the Link, choose "On Click"option, Access Level, and choose to Publish the link.
      Click Save.

Repeat the above steps to create more links and you are good to go.

      I hope that this helps.

      Cheers!

    • Hello,
Thank You for taking the time to write that explanation up.
That was handy for next thing I want to do, but isn't the initial thing I am trying to do.
Probably most likely my fault from poor explanation which Ive always suffered from GRRR.

Umm, what I am trying to do is, I need a left hand menu created could be named lets say "AusArena Info"
Now that menu will display on a specific page being "ausarena info" as well.
Now that block/module ?? needs to be on the left hand side.
In that block I want too have in the "menu" things titled like:

      AusArena Admins
      Server Rules
      etc etc

So in that left hand menu when someone clicks on AusArena Admins the information in that page will open in the same window and display text and info I have written up and displays in the middle area of that same page.

Oh gee I hope that makes sense.
I dont know how to create that and where content I create to link it ?? to a menu which I dont understand how to create.
Im sure it should be easy but i dont understand it.
Too used too using IPB, and of course Joomla is very very different.

    • I created a menu if you go to www.ausarena.com/index.php?option=com_search&Itemid=5
the menu on the left top menu named ausarena info, inside the menu has 2 links, "huh" and "aus info" when those are clicked it takes me too a different page and I dont know why.
I need the content to open in the same page the menu is in.

Ive looked through content, menu, category, site modules, selection and cannot see how or why it opens it under a different page.
Infact I dont even know what that page is

You are are on the right track and are almost there!

Here is what you are missing, you must assign whatever modules that you want to be displayed on the AUS Info page to that page.
Bear with me for a moment.

Login to the Admin backend, choose Modules/ Site Modules.
Click in the box to the left of the AusArena Info module, on the top menu click Edit.
In the AusArena Info Module Edit screen look on the right side - you will see all the pages on your site listed [see attached pic] - whatever page(s) are highlighted, are the page(s) that AusArena Info menu will appear on.
Hold down the Control (Ctrl) button on your keyboard and left click all the pages that you want the AusArena Info module to appear on. Click Save on the top menu.
Repeat for any other modules that you wish to appear on certain pages.

So, after doing this, when someone click on a link in the AusArena Info Menu, the page will change, but the modules that you want to appear on that page are displayed. That will give you the desired results as I understand.

Play with this and you will soon get the hang of it.

Btw, before you can link to any content, you must first create that content (or at least the page that the content will be on).
For example, before you can link to your:
      AusArena Admins
      Server Rules
pages, you will have to create them - as articles or static content.

Post if you have any queries and good luck.

      Cheers!

    • Yes It already was selected as AusArena Info for pages to be displayed on.

ALl I can think of is somehow I have created the menu wrongly ?
When I look at site modules to the right of that AusArena Info I see it says

      Type: mod_mainmenu

Is that the problem ? Its somehow not it's own menu and is attatched to being a main menu ? Not sure...

    • Here are the final key steps to achieve what you are trying to do, this should be enlightening.

Use my previous instructions for Editing the AusArena Info module and while holding your keyboard Control key down, choose the menu items as per the attached pic.

      I hope that this helps.

      Cheers!

    • I did that as well and it still opens in another page thats blue not red, and I am soooo silly its because I didnt create that header menu I just renamed one that was there and I think thats why it keeps opening them in a different window. lol

On upside I have learnt to make a menu lol

      Thank You! :)
