Rocket Launch Problems 101

    • Hello,

I am trying to figure out how to install the Rocket Launcher. You would think this would be easy but I have done the tutorials and examples and I am think I am missing some basics here.

Where can I post this problem and get some help please. I am pretty computer savy with a lot of common sense so maybe this will be a quick fix. I have access to my own whm/cpanel/root and FTP and all that basic stuff required. I can goto the new chat area they created in this forum if anyone wants to meet me there. No one really seems to be using it much, so I don't think it would be a problem to chat there.

      www.rockettheme.com/help/public-chat

Thanks for any help ahead of time! I am so frustrated here.

      Updated edit:
Not getting much of a reply, jus tpeople viewing here so maybe someone can suggest where I should put this sort of post at and get more of a response as a newbee? Thanks.

      Gary

    • There are some basic guidelines below this info, they mirror the tutorials found here:

      www.rockettheme.com/joomla-tutorials/video-tutorials

      www.rockettheme.com/joomla-tutorials

      A few key points;

You need to create a DB on your server before you begin.
If possible, upload the Rocket Launcher and extract it on your server.

We really can't figure out the problem from:
I have done the tutorials and examples and I am think I am missing some basics here.

Could you tell us at what point you are getting stuck?

      For quick reference:

      NOTE!!!

The Rocket Launcher is for a fresh install ONLY.

It contains a complete version of the latest Joomla release, the template, and all the sample data you see in the demo. Whether or not you decide to install the sample data is up to you. If you want to replicate the demo site, use it, if you want a clean install of Joomla with the template applied, don’t use it.

You can not use the Rocket Launcher in an existing install of Joomla. If you already have an existing install of Joomla, you will need to apply the template file to it.

      Unzip the Rocket Launcher.

FTP the folder and its contents to, depending on your platform, public_html or httdocs

Alternately, you can upload the zipped RL package and extract it on your server through the control panel.

Before you start, you’ll need to create a database on your server.

Once you’ve uploaded the Rocket Launcher and created a database, browse to the folder,

      Ex: www.mysite.com/template_directory_name

You don't have to navigate to the installation folder, if Joomla hasn't been installed yet, it will navigate to the install directory automatically. (How cool is that?!)

Note: It's a really simple point, but don't be confused by the ' www.mysite.com/ ' replace 'mysite.com' with your site's URL, for example, here it would be www.rockettheme.com/template_directory_name

      The installation screen will appear.

      Screen 1:
      Choose language

      Screen 2:
      Pre-installation Check

      Screen 3:
      License

      Screen 4:
You’ll need the following info to make the database connection with Joomla:
      Host Name
Username (for the database you’ve created)
Password (for the database you’ve created)
Database Name (for the database you’ve created)

      Screen 5:
You can skip this and use an FTP client

      Screen6:
Site Name: This will appear in the title bar of your browser.
Your e-mail: the address you want to use to receive mail from the site
Password: this is for the admin login for Joomla, it can be different than the DB password.

      Install Sample Data?
If you want to replicate the site with all the sample content, click on ‘Install Sample Data’.
If you don’t want to install the sample data, click next, a prompt will appear confirming that you want to skip.

      Screen 7:
You’ll be prompted to delete or rename the installation directory.

Before you can view the site or login as administrator, you’ll need to browse to the directory in your FTP client or CP and do so.

    • I appreciate your response.
Question 1: Is the Rocket Launcer [Joomla_RT_Refraction_j15] a totally seperate install ALL ALONE into any directory of Joomla 1.5 on my site?

In another words. If I install this like the tutorial says, there is no template of the Refraction install mentioned. However, many times in the Rocket theme explanations it talks about how Rocket Launcher is a COMPLETE site with all the bells and whistles installed. When I so this alone to a directory, it is a blank page. When I goto choose the template in the Admin area it is not there yet---just the common 2 standard templates are there. So common sense tells me I am missing a sequence here. So here goes my second question.

Question 2: If you need to install the RefractionTemplate [ rt_refraction_j15 ] first, then what comes first here, the chicken or the egg? Do I then copy the Rocket launcher files INTO the same directory as the rt_refraction_j15 was put into?

Question 3: I might be messing up with the database stuff. I am choosing MySQLDatabase to enter the DBase information and bascially somewhat following the same sequence or pattern of how a normal joomla database that is pre-created in Fantastico by default. Should I be using the PHPMyAdmin area to create my DB only?

    • I am reading over what you sent me now. But I wanted to send this to you so you could have more details. I already see that it says:

      "NOTE!!!
The Rocket Launcher is for a fresh install ONLY.
It contains a complete version of the latest Joomla release, the template, and all the sample data you see in the demo. Whether or not you decide to install the sample data is up to you. If you want to replicate the demo site, use it, if you want a clean install of Joomla with the template applied, don’t use it."

Maybe you can clarify this more. I am lost here. If this is so then why do I NOT see the template in the template section to make it my default?

    • More info: I have been able to upload the Rocket launcher to a directory and I can go through the joomla install to what appears is a success all the way through. But perhaps it is the db I am not doing correct. I can show some screen shots if you want of my db setup. I also have webEx, and can conference people in for free so they can see my computer screen if you want to really assist and help me out. It is safe and secure.

      www.webex.com

I can see what I can do for your computer needs as well (I know a lot of useful information and legal freebee's) whoever wants to try to help me out. Thanks.

    • Question 1: Is the Rocket Launcer [Joomla_RT_Refraction_j15] a totally seperate install ALL ALONE into any directory of Joomla 1.5 on my site?

If you've used your hosts installer you cannot use the Rocket Launcher.

You can not use the Rocket Launcher in an existing install of Joomla. If you already have an existing install of Joomla, you will need to apply the template file to it.

There are two types if installs, using the RL for a CLEAN install to a directory where NO current install exists.

Applying the template (and extensions where applicable) to an existing Joomla install, either an exiting site or one you just set up with your host's installer.
Question 2: If you need to install the RefractionTemplate [ rt_refraction_j15 ] first, then what comes first here, the chicken or the egg? Do I then copy the Rocket launcher files INTO the same directory as the rt_refraction_j15 was put into?

Again, if you've installed Joomla with your hosts installer, don't use the RL, use the template file and the extensions.

Note, this will apply the template to the install, but it will not duplicate the demo content.

Don't confuse the template file (and extensions) with the Rocket Launcher.

Before you start, you’ll need to create a database on your server.

Yes, you should be creating a new DB in phpMyAdmin for each installation you are creating.

Don't keep trying to reinstall the RL several times over in separate directories using the same DB.

      So from here....

Upload the zipped RL package to the server, extract it to the directory you want to install it from, e.g., public_html, or joomla1, joomla2, joomla3, etc.

Remember if you keep extracting to the root, you're going to keep overwriting files.

Create a new DB for each install you want to perform.

*** Running the install with the same DB installs all your sites in the same DB.

Before you go any further, I delete anything you have now, the DB, the directories, etc.

If you've been installing over and over without creating a new DB and have been copying files instead of extracting / uploading files to clean directories, things are bound to be corrupt.
