Does anyone of any data on what screen resolutions are used by percentage of internet users? There was a time when when 640x480 was a good target. Now It seems that 800x600 or 1024x768 can be minimun targets too. Personally I like the fluid temnplates since they change to fit the users screen. The question has come up since many of the latests tempates created here seem to be targeting fixed 1024x768 screens. When viewing them with 800x600 the horizontal scroll bar comes up.
Also does creating a fluid template add a lot of estra work compared to a fixed width?
Consider your web audience. If you are hosting a news site, you might want to consider 800x600 or a fluid width since most of your content ix text anyway.
For anything like a game site, graphics site, etc. you can count on the users having higher resolutions to begin with.
Also, the only people who would still be running at 800x600 would be using outdated computers that would be at least 7+ years old. Would those people be the ones using your website?
Thanks for the fast response. The sites I've been creating are general business sites for clients. At least this gives some perspective on what criteria I should be considering when selecting a template for a client.
It looks like while the rest of the world has gone to greater resolutions than 800x600, our school is left behind! While our 14 inch monitors can be configured to a higher resolution, our tech person insists on setting them to 800x600! She just doesn't get the fact that our kids aren't middle-aged.
Most of the employees here are content to scroll left and right--and that is what they have to do with our school site too. I keep suggesting they set their resolution higher and upgrade their screens with a stronger pair of $6 reading glasses :! That's what I'll do when I need to--I'd rather do that than lose a centimeter of screen space!
I have noticed this with some of the schools I work with too. They have these great 17" dell LCD displays in the computer lab. However they are set for 800x600 too. I'll have to look into why. I'd bet the computers were shipped that way and no one thought to change them.
Thanks for the info Andy, i wish to point out to others here that the joomla.org site has a highly tech savvy viewership(is that a word? firefox says it isn't). ???
Tech savvy individuals aren't likely to still use 14" monitors or 800x600 resolutions.
Always keep your target audience in mind when making the resolution decision.
Otherwise, go for fluid or 800x600 width for 2 months, check your stats, then optimize your resolution settings accordingly.
