Articles can only be published in the mainbody. If you want to create some contents, you can use custom html module.
Extensions >> Module Manager, and click New button
Then, you can choose Custom HTML type
Sorry, I can't get you well with "main outline"...
If you want to publish anything in user1 position, in the module manager, just set the position to "user1"
Retired, but build and run websites for organisations of school leaders and others - e.g. http://www.icponline.org, http://www.aspa.asn.au, http://www.appa.asn.au
Re: How do you assign position to an article?

If you mean by "how positioning works", which modules are in which position in the template, then you can find that out by looking at the demo template site here at RT for that template. There is always a screen that shows the module positions for that particular template - each template has different numbers of module positions. I print that screen and keep it with me when I'm working on a site.
He wants to know how to get content into a particular module position. It's a very basic question but one which I'm not really sure how to answer since I only joined a few days ago.
All I can say is that whatever administrator screen you happen to be in, if you click on the Help button (top right corner), pretty clear instructions do come up. Unfortunately, not usually for the more advanced parameters.
Yes indeed, you can preview a template and you can see that positions John. But my question is, based on those positions, how do I start from scratch and put something (whatever, article, image, x, y, z) in that space?
Is there a step by step tutorial or guide on how to do this? I cannot all be trial and error? Somebody must have written something related to this?
You need to use the Module Manager under the extensions menu in the backend. You have some default modules and you can add more. There are modules for just about anything. Check out the extensions area of the RT club for some great modules to feature content.
In the module manager, just click on a module and in the configuration you can choose what position to put it in (new modules default to the left position). You can also choose which menu items you want the module to appear on or you can leave it to appear on all pages.
If you want a module with custom text, you can click the New button at the top right and choose Custom HTML for your module type.
Hope that gets you started. If you have more questions, just keep asking. I've been working with Joomla for about 6 years now and I learned almost everything I know from trial and error and this community.
There are joomla module extensions that let you publish articles inside a module. It's pretty straight forward. Create the article. Install the module below. Configure it by including the content id. If you need to publish multiple articles in a module, just make copies of the include content item module.
