Background Color in Blog Layout

I'm sorry to re-post this but perhaps I dthis question isn't template specific (where I posted before). It's been a couple of weeks with no response so if you could please help, I'd appreciate it.
I'm using the blog item layout as rows and would like each preview of the article to have a different background color. Right now, it's all white.
I've looked at the blog_item.php to override it as well as the CSS but I'm not sure where exactly to change it so the colors alternate.
Here's an image with every story having a gray background:

And what I want to do (alternate the gray and white every other story).

Right now, the background of each story is #F8F8F8 (grayish color), which is located under the contentpaneopensection in template_css -- this line:
.contentpaneopensection {
width: 100%;
background: #F8F8F8 0 0 repeat-y;
}
What I'm trying to do is make the background of each story alternate between the #F8F8F8 (grayish) color and your basic #FFFFFF white color like the second screen.
