Noob question

    • Hi all,

I'm new in this stuff and I had a quiestion about the templates.
When you look in to the demo section you see very nice templates.
The problem that I have is that when I download the new template and install it on my server the template looks different that on the demo site.
The temaplte from januari ( Gator ) looks very nice on the demosite but very poor on my site.
Do I have to make modifications?

    • a template sometimes just looks like an empty shell until you fill it up with content and put all the modules in suitable positions.

perhaps if you posted a link to your site we might be able to tell you what you're overlooking.

    • I can understand that it is off-putting when you load a new template it looks...well.....a bit crap!

Take two different templates, say Versatility and Sporticus. Versatility uses (usually) left and/or right right position modules, whereas Sporticus uses User5/6 & 7 to display vertical content. Switching from one of the these templates to the other does completely ruin the layout of the site as it is only fit for the original template.

Unfortunately there is not much you can do about that, but as you become more familiar with the J! system then I don't think it is a major issue, and it's not like you will be switching templates on a daily or weekly basis...tho I'm sure RT members switch more than most :D

    • It would be interesting if you could download an all in one joomlapacked, WYSIWYG version of a template.

I have been working with a customized version of the BF 2142 template, when I finish I test it out with Joomlapack, which I think is an awesome extension, to see if it works.

      Just a thought about that.

I use Joomla Server on my computer to build Joomla sites. It has pretty much the same stuff that you'd find at a company hosting your site.

When I first installed Joomla Server, a finished site was provided to you. It has a lot of the contect there to be edited.

Also, when you install Joomla, it also asks you if you want to include 'Sample' info too. I suggest that anyone wanting to get started, try that option. Then you can install any Joomla template you want and adjust it to suit your needs.

I would also suggest to anyone that is new to Joomla, that they build a site and use it to learn Joomla. The Joomla manual is here:

    • Dave,

I know how to create the exact same thing and understand all of those options, but damn it man I am lazy. Its like going to the store to get your kid a bike, you know you can build it, but it sure would be nice if it was already built. Kind of like buying the floor model.

    • I fail to see how a fully packaged site full of dummy/placeholder data is desirable. Surely it would take longer to go through and clean out all the crap than it would to just build up your own content? I mean, the sample data you can install with J! is bad enough ;)

    • Yeah, content is the major part to any website and these templates really shine when they are packed full of content. As far as the demo site setups are concerned (Sporticus series in particular) you can read through this guide: www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?t=6869&rb_v=viewtopic for step by step instructions on how to tweak your content, module placement, etc to look similar to what you see on the demo.

I plan to put together guides like this each month as the new templates come out, to make it a little easier for folks to quickly get their new sites set up in "demo fashion". :)

    • Maybe a mysql dump of the demo DB content that you could import?
I would use that just to have the demo server and the "doc" Andy and Kevin put into a template design ready to deploy locally for testing. Viewing how the content is organized in the back end would be a great help to many new Joomla users.

Of course I would think it would be wise to ask users NOT to deploy that DB dump to a production site. :)

    • Surely you would all agree that if anyone is suitable to be putting up live Joomla! sites, then they must be able to jig modules about in the backend?!? It's one of the first core skills you need when using Joolmla!

The guide that comes with Sporticus is more than enough in my mind, there is even a screenshot of the template with module positions layered on top.
