Gantry and new template

Hi Guys,
i have been waiting for a long time for the new template.
But the template isn't the right one for my needs this time, but i would love to use gantry.
And here the problem with my understanding starts.
How can i use Gantry? Is gantry only for this template? Can i integrate gantry to an existing website with another template?
Hope you could give me some hints with gantry.
