how to assign url's to menu items?

    • Does anyone know where you can find out what url is assigned to a content item? I setup my menu as all link-url and just put a # sign in the url spot for now so that I could get the whole menu layed out. Then I made the pages for the content items. Now I need to find out what the url is for each content item that has a menu link so that I can assign it to the menu item. I know I could hav eused the other options when creating the menu items and had the menu item assigned to the content item, but I read that using links is better in order to reduce duplicate content. So the only problem I am having is how to find out what the url is for the content items..as it's not listed anywhere on the screen when you enter into the admin page for the content items.

Thanks for any help any of you can provide,

    • try creating links to the content items in question another way... "link to content item"

then navigate to the content item from the frontend and copy the url.

go back to backend menu manager and delete the menu item you had created earlier and create a new menu item as a 'link to url'.. you now have the link to the content item.

      OR

in the backend, navigate to the content item

on the right pane, 'publishing' tab, near the bottom there is a Content ID: X (x being a number)

make a note of that number, navigate to your menu manager and create the menu item linking to the url:
      www.YOURSITE.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id= X

      hope that helps

edit: Posted this question on the joomla forum also, went back to check if their was any response to it after reading this...and someone else had posted a similar question after that got the answer I was looking for. Here's a link to it, and this is exactly what I was looking for:)
      http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,141679.0.html

I knew about the content linking option..but as stated above, was trying to do the url link because of duplicate content problem. I read on alledia.com or somewhere that if you do it that way, it makes like 5-6 different copies of the one page, so it's best to link with urls. I did think about doing the content link to find out the url then deleting that menu item and making a new one with the url link..but that just seems like going around your rear to get to your elbow..a lot more work than it should be. I figured there should be a better way of doing it. I am surprised that once you make a content item, then go into that item from the backend, there is not a spot on that page that shows you what the url to it is, sort of like the spot on the menu item in the backend if you link the menu item directly to the content item. Then there is a line on the page that says "url: blah blah blah" I figured there should be something like that on the backend page of the content item, but I didn't see anything. I will try your last suggestion, hopefully that works..still seems like they should bake it a little more user friendly though... but maybe that's something they changed in 1.5, or at least I can hope:)

      Thanks for the advice,
      David Henderson

Edit 2: Seems I was a little overzelous. That post on joomla.org was not an answer to my question, it was an answer to a somewhat similar question. They showed you how to make links to content items without having them as a menu item. I still need to know the url of a content item for making them a link-url menu item. So I will try the method you described on the first answer to this post:)

      Thanks!
