    Gantry for Virtuemart

Posted 15 years 4 months ago
    • I am currently evaluating the different templates to use to create a new ecommerce site. I believe I have settled on the Mynxx template, due to its integration with Virtuemart.

My question is this, are the designers at RT planning on developing additional Gantry templates which will be as tightly woven into Virtuemart as the Mynxx template is? I like the layout of Gantry, however the integration of Mynxx with Virtuemart is hard to pass up.

      Thank you!

    • Better yet... skip Virtuemart and go with a better ecomm solution that you can use with any template/design...!

(coming from someone who has used VM on multiple sites, contributed code to the community, etc.)

    • To be honest.. we have had better performance, security and user experience from almost every other ecomm app we've used instead of VM.. and to be honest, I WANT to like and support VM.. but, after long hours of trouble shooting with no help on major bugs from the devs.. it was time to invest time elsewhere. I would suggest folks look at these options:

      nano-cart.com
(in private beta - to be released soon I think, downside - unavailable outside of beta)
      foxycart.com
(able to be included in almost any site, downside - it's hosted so it'll cost ya ea. mo.)
      or even
      www.dragdropcart.com/
(Not as flexible as the previously mentioned apps, but for a small site it works fine. One down side is that you have to re-style it to match the design.. but it's decent for the $.)

and last but not least,.. when the site requires a strong feature set, we use Interspire Shopping Cart - www.interspire.com/shoppingcart/
(It is an enterprise level cart app with a full feature set, from mass updates, gift cards to QuickBooks sync.. you name it.)

Those are what we use... and just our opinions on VM. I mean no disrepsect to anyone devoting time to develop or using VM
(I personally still spend time on the forums and Experts Exchange helping people work through the various glitches encountered by VM users.)

What cart solution do you use??
      Cheers

    • Those options look good...but just starting out....I like VM b/c its FREE...lol. If my idea takes off, then i'll look to improve upon it. Having VM integrated into Joomla, and a Rockettheme template was really a plus for me. And, I was a little to skeptical about using RocketCart, due to its simplistic nature, and lack of security features.

Thanks for the heads up though, I'll look at those other options as my company matures.

Anyone messed about with this cart system yet?
I believe it's already been bridged with several cms solutions including wordpress, drupal and a joomla bridge is in the works (as a component in joomla)

Was wondering if anyone out here in rocketthemeland has any experience with this cart, it's templating system etc.

EDIT: not much nice said about it over at opensourcecms.com... other than it looks nice but is a nightmare to work with...templating sucks, it's slow, etc etc

    • Yes, Magento is a solid performer, and build on a proven framework as well (Zend Framework, which we develop most of our enterprise level apps with). However, it's templating (templates within templates, within templates) can be brutal to do anything more than minor CSS changes, although it's not impossible. Magento has a nice community behind it, but when you get into needing things like Fedex (that is supossed to 'come with' Magento) and you have to hack and add modules or buy others solutions - many times you get to a point where buying a commercial, professionally supported app is better. But Magento does have a strong feature set and a good community.

    • I've been working with Magento lately and it's starting to grow on me. It's HUGE when it comes to any kind of CMS system and that can be cumbersome, but I'm getting used to the templating and it's really not horrible after diving into it.

As for how they run their site, they don't like answers being posted and delete the ones that help most...then kindly let you know that for $10,000 /year, you can use their enterprise edition.

As for a system that has gained a lot of ground and looks to be a strong one into the future, Magento looks like it'll be able to hold it's own...which hopefully means frequent updates and fixes.

Either one you go with, make sure you choose the right tool for the job. By that I mean that if you want a shopping cart site, choose a shopping cart framework, if you want a dynamic website with modules and articles, choose a CMS. Both systems can do a little bit of the other, but are each better at their own game.

    • Totally agree on the learning curve for templating -for front end devs it's just a matter of learning the ropes and digging into docs/code.. but, for newbies to design or development, it can be a real hurdle.

I haven't experienced what you mentioned with deleted posts,. but surely feel the 'pressure' of them pushing their paid solution. If they're deleting posts, thats no good.

Very well said in regards to selecting the right tool for the job - and Magento being, or trying to be, a pseudo-CMS is the reason I didn't mention it while discussing ecomm fro Joomla. :) I prefer something, if I am going to use a CMS, that integrates and doesn't duplicate that CMS. I'm excited to see Nano-Cart launch as from what I have seen it's basically a slimmed-down, owned (not hosted!) shopping cart like Foxy Cart ! Which is great, since I can include it in other CMS's, PHP websites, etc..
