Suggest a gallery for family site

  • Suggest a gallery for family site

    • After having done quite a few sites for other people/reasons I've finally gotten around to rewriting my own family site. When Vortex was released, I knew it was time to move my old, hand written site (in Notepad) to Joomla! The new site is well underway and the last hurdle I have to overcome (aside from the mundane moving of pages) is to create a media gallery.

My immediate family is a close, tight-nit group that is always sharing photos of their children, hobbies, etc. The previous method of sharing photos was by email and that is very inefficient.

Looking into the available galleries shows a lot of choices. I'm hoping someone can suggest a gallery that would best fit our needs and save me a lot of valuable installing, configuring and testing time.

What we are looking for in a gallery:

      - Inherent organization of photos
      - Family members can upload their own photos
      - module for newest photos
      - module for random photo
      - upload and playback of videos (would be nice to be all in one package but not a deal breaker)

    • David,

Take a look at Gallery2. While it is not a Joomla component there is a bridge available. Gallery2 seems to be a very full featured and well established system. The forums for the bridge are at forum.4theweb.nl and Gallery2 can be found at gallery.menalto.com

      Hope that helps.

    • This certainly looks the option with the most flexibility - if not the most configuration. For those of you that have gone this route, what tips can you give to help ease the installation and bridging? Does the Gallery need to be insalled in the Joomla folder?

    • I tried to integrate Gallery2 and its bridge into our community site... but mostl have problems uploading to the gallery... so I went on searching other option... and finally settled with datsogallery. It's simple yet powerful to give a decent gallery where people can easily upload the pictures.

      See its website: datsogallery.fr

Except for video stuff, datsogallery has all other things on your list with addition that you can also show the pics with lightbox.

Unfortunately the developer site is in russian or whatever it is which I don't understand... But the component and its modules are in english... or there are translations to other languages as well.

    • I'm really impressed with the latest version of the Zoom Gallery. Zoom Gallery was the gallery of choice once, but feel off the radar and wasn't updated for about a year and a half. But it seems to be back and much development has been done on it. It's not the same animal as before. I'm trying out on a local server. I'm impressed.

      P.S. - Gallery 2 is very nice.

One thing I've done on an install was to use a module called Simple. I disabled the standard permissions, album editing, and upload process and only use the Simple module which greatly eases the user interface for these processes.

G2 can be installed in a sub folder and they advise that the actual media directory is outside of your web route.
