    • Hi

Been looking for a tutorial on using the section manager but can't seem to find one.

Appreciate if someone can explain to me what is the main purpose of using the section manager?

      Tks!

    • If you think of Joomla like a file cabinet, then the section manager is the drawer, the category manager is the folders in the drawer (section), and the articles/items are the pieces of paper in the folder (category) in the drawer (section). You can set up menus to access sections or categories or articles/items.

Sections are the top level in the hierarchy of things in Joomla. The Section Manager allows you to manage the sections.

I'm not sure of that is clear. I took some time to realise the usefulness of sections/categories - now I'm OK with them.

    • For small sites, you can usually have just one Section and many Categories.

For larger sites, you may want to have more than one Section and then have many Categories under each Section.

    • wow..that really cleared things up for me...

so basically it acts more or less like a hierarchy tree.

I can have 1 main section for my site, with categories like articles, news, offers, features?

    • You are right about the hierarchy concept.

I have several sections on my larger sites, e.g. About, News, Articles, etc. and then I have several categories under some of those, e.g. under About might be Organisation, Documents, etc., while the News section might have just the one category. If you think that your site might grow, then you might need to plan for future sections and categories that do not exist yet.

    • Thanks alot Jonn for your assistance.

Working with Joomla does take a lot of site planning.

At least now i'm on the right path

    • Try doing a plan of your site in a tree format on paper first. That helps me see the overall organisation.

    • Also note at any time you can add new Sections and Categories and move your articles around to suit your needs.

No worrites about stuff getting lost, Joomla will take care of that automatically....
    • Thanks,

    • True. As your site grows, you can move the articles to the new sections and categories that you set up. As Jem says, you don't have to re-do any links, as Joomla handles all that. It's a great feature!
