Overwriting the template

Hi all,
I am just wondering what happens if I delete the template folder and then re-install it again or just overwrite it by re-installing it??? Will I loose the sections, categories, menu items, articles and modules and plug ins installed???
The reason is that I have modified some parameters of the HiveMind Template and one application is not displaying me the results so, but it does display the results in virtual server with Mamp, with a fresh installed template, so I suppose something where wrong in the variations of parameters of HiveMind Template.

1. Switch the template to a default template temporarily.
2. Uninstall the (HiveMind) template.
3. Reinstall the new HiveMind template.
4. Switch to the new HiveMind template.
You will not lose any sections, categories, articles, etc...
But as always, you should back up all your files and DB before making major changes. - Thanks,

HiveMind is the default template at the moment!

What software do you recommend me to back up my site? I have never done that so far
