image editing in photoshop?

    • hello,
I'm a new member of the rockettheme 'scene' because I really love the templates that are produced here. My only problem is that I'm a photoshop guy with hardly any experience in fireworks. Now I wonder what's the best tactic for me to attack the templates: find out (via firebug and webdeveloper) what the relevant images are and then edit them in photoshop or buy a book about fireworks and do it that way. I was trying to do a tutorial on this site but I realize I have to learn the basics of fireworks first because I got stuck.
I wonder if there are folks out here that just use photoshop to edit their templates.

I hope anyone can give me a good advice. I am a reasonable fast student when it comes to learning software but I have to be motivated to learn it.

      thanks,
      Sander

    • You'll get a lot of different answers.

You certainly can use Photoshop to edit the templates, but there are a few things that you need to keep in mind:

You'll find that the templates (the newer ones anyway) use layered .png files in the source. This allows you to edit the particular color that you want to edit, and Fireworks is totally the way to go for that. If you must use PS, then at least use Fireworks to export the correct layer.

Another problem with Photoshop is that it is not good at working with .png files in general. There is a plugin that seems to correct that, or you can use Fireworks to export an image that you create in PS, but it is something to think about.

I love Photoshop, and have been using it for 10 years or so, but I am beginning to see the joy of Fireworks.

I say use both, and stick to what they are really good at. Fireworks is great for creating/editing Web elements (buttons, etc.), but Photoshop is still the king when it comes to editing photos.

    • I use PhotoShop - and have since vs 1.0 was released. I'll have to echo Matthew on the issue. I'll probably use PS the most because I'm a photographer (not for biz) but use Fireworks as Matthew says. I do think that Andy has gone the route that gives the greatest ease and the highest quality, but with Matthew's technique you can be successful. Start by learning enough Fireworks to be able to export to PS and finish the job.

However, in going deeper with Fireworks, you can also take advantage of the web 'slices' that are offered by Andy in the Source.png files.

I just continue my way using photoshop (and xara xtreme + paint shop pro) while learning fireworks. And when the time is right (when I understand enough) I'll probably switch.

    • I find its always easier not to stick to one program. When im doing template editing, i always have photoshop & fireworks open together due to the limitations of certain aspects in each program.

I only started playing with fireworks when i joined Rocket Theme and i would highly recommend using it when editing the templates. To be fair, it took me a while to figure out that the source files where suppose to be opened in fireworks ::) ;D

Me too. I was wondering why they were all flattened out. That's what PS does to the png file.

    • If you are familiar with Photoshop/ Paint Shop Pro, you will find that using Fireworks isn't hard to learn.
No book required IMHO, just get it and start using it.

      Best of luck!

Sorry about that James, IMHO = In My Humble Opinion.

Btw (by the way), I find the Fireworks "Center In Document" command extremely useful, sorry that I cannot find a link for it at this time. :-[

      Cheers!
