    Gantry Suggestions

Posted 15 years 1 month ago
    • I'm sure this have been brought up before, but it seems that some template clubs that have a framework, have gone back to re-implement their framework into older templates. I realize that this may not be feasable for older RT templates.

However, I would like to see Gantry in some recent templates, like Infuse. Based on the popularity and flexibility of Infuse, this would be great template to have the Gantry framework and would be well worth the effort in my opinion.

Also, I'm still a bit confused as to why Gantry doesn't offer some sort of mobile iPhone option. Sure, we can use another template for this, but this would involve developing another site or re-tooling an RT template with a single column, etc. I know there are some tools that offer this type of conversion. I just thought this would be a nice option to have in the framework, since other vendor frameworks offer this option. Thanks.

    • No, just an FYI for you that Gantry has the ability to become extensible to other platforms.

It probably will be in the future but all this development takes time.

As far as back porting the older templates, AFAIK, there are no plans for this.

I saw another thread about this and to summarize, to create and older template with the Gantry framework would require the entire template to be rewritten from the ground up.

It's not as simple as converting a J1.0 to J1.5 template, which actually not simple.

Believe it or not, on average it takes 26-28 days to create each month's, when the team gets that far, the moderators get a chance to work with it and look for bugs.

To back port the older template to the Gantry framework would literally double the work for the team and the moderators.

What you might see in the future is, for example, is an 'Infuse 2' template, Infuse with the Gantry framework.

But, as I mentioned, knocking out a new template and back porting the older ones probably wont happen.

Keep in mind while it's 'business as usual' with all the templates and the forum, just over the horizon is J1.6.

The team has to consider compatibility of all the templates with J1.6.

    • Thanks Jem for the detailed explanation; much appreciated. I realize that it wasn't going to be feasable to back-port some of the templates. Perhaps the other template vendors use a different approach or their framework is not as complicated, which is my guess.

However, I do like your idea on maybe an Infuse 2. There were a few popular templates, like Infuse, that could do really well using the new framework. And I would like to see some sort of mobile support at some time. I do look forward to see what's coming.

You know, RT has released V2s of many of their more popular template, and in fact, Versatility had four releases.

Although many users were happy, we got almost an equal amount of negative feedback for being 'lazy' or 'cheating' by 'just' tweaking older templates.

If I were you, I post your suggestion for V2s of the more popular templates in the Gantry framework here: www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=16&rb_v=viewforum

(If in fact you think it's a good idea and would mind getting an old template in the Gantry framework as opposed to a completely now one once in a while.)

If you do so, PM me a link to the thread.

I'll keep an eye on it and if there's enough feedback, I'll forward it to the team.

    • And another suggestion... I like designing sites with options to have columns on both sides of the content, while Gantry limits us to just one side...

And as another thing, if I change that side (from right to left, for example) in CSS, my module-position alphabet goes backwards. *sighs*

Any plans to make a template with a column (or options at least ) on either side or BOTH sides of the content/component area?

I've totally hacked one Gantry template to get what I want, but I'd love a stable version. *smiles*

      Thanks!

This is possible with the current Gantry framework....

Template Manager > Layouts > MainBody Positions > Use the sliders

For example, click on Positions '3', you will see 'mb' 'sa' 'sb'

When you mouse over the slider you will see something like '8,2,2'.

Sliding the slider to the right, you will see the layout change to '4,4,4,', slide it a bit more and you will see '3,6,3', '2,8,2'.

This will put a column on wither side of the mainbody.
