I'm going to be away for most of the weekend scouring the nation's capital with my camera, but I leave you these words of wisdom....
TUTORIAL: How to help someone at RT
Helping someone with their template makes us feel good. We love to see a website that looks good because of the help that we at RocketTheme have freely given.
However, there are those very few ‘grumble bunnies’ out there that need a little extra care. Here are a few things to keep in mind while you attempt to come to someone’s aid.
1. Don’t make fun of them:
Some novices just don’t know about PHP, CSS and the ins and outs of the various templates and extensions. I know that I don't. Andy has provided a number of resources, but he can’t be expected to do it all. So, the next time a newbie has a request, no matter how lame it is or how ridiculous it sounds – or how retarded (can’t I still say that?) it may be, respond with a gracious manner. You may be thinking to yourself, “This guy is a complete idiot!”, but DO NOT respond to him as the imbecile that he may be.
2. Don’t act like you know it all:
I’ve been at RT for almost two years. I’ve amassed a good amount of knowledge. But, with all that I know – and I do know a lot, I would never tell others of the vast extent of my knowledge – even though it IS huge! It’s not profitable for me to brag about my superior intellect. I’m modest about this. As a matter of fact, I wrote a 1,263 page book on how modest I am. However, people don’t like to be told how smart I am, so don’t you do it either!
3. Make the person feel welcome:
We all lead busy lives. You may be downloading a template to sell off-shore to a template pirate facility, but just because you are busy, doesn’t mean you have to be short or rude to someone. It’s important that the one in need feel love, acceptance and assurance that all will be fine at RocketTheme. Helping someone is not the time to blow a gasket! YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!! Gosh! How many times do I have to keep flappin’ my gums about this???
4. Make your answer quick and short:
You know the old saying, “Brevity is next to godliness.” Well, nothing could be more true at RocketTheme. A person might have an issue with their template or a question about an extension, but a fast response by you means that they can get back to work or have a free beer in the Pro Lounge or read the next episode of ANDY TO THE RESCUE. In other words, don't waste time. There's nothing worse than someone who goes on and on and on and on. Don't you find it annoying? Jaws just a flappin' uncontrollably with no thought of the reader. Know what I mean? It's like advice that is endless! There should be an end to a conversation! It's bad form. There's no reason to extend things any longer than necessary. It's just not good manners. Being verbose is bad on the nerves and sour for the digestion. Did you know that? Sure, when someone talks on for hours, the listener's digestion is effected. I know it's true because I read it on the Internet! But, I digress.
5. Don't waste Andy's time:
Andy gets a whopping 5,000 e-mail each day! Sure, a lot of them are for free p - - - - s enlargers, generic Viagra subscriptions, baldness remedies and letters from long lost relatives in Nigeria. The last thing that Andy needs is for YOU asking him some silly question... What's this?... I just got a PM from Andy. Hold on...
6. Don't ever assume that Andy doesn't want to help:
I can't think of another commercial website that offers as much personal service as Andy. Why is that? No sooner do I type out a question then there's Andy answering it. What's up with that? Hmmm.. It could be that Andy is psychic. That's right! He reads minds! That's why he answers so quickly – he reads our minds and has the answer before we ever think of sending out a call for help! Hmmm... I wonder if Andy's an alien and Kevin is one of those Pod Persons?? Yikes! So thats why he calls it RocketTheme!
And finally...
7. Don't shake uncontrollably:
I know that many of us start gyrating when the beginning of the month is near – and you thought women only had 'monthlies'! The ladies have it harder than us guys. Imagine dealing with, well... 'you know' and having the template release shakes too. Wow! Those poor girls! That's why Andy should come up with the first 'scratch & sniff' template - or better yet, an eatable template that tastes like chocolate! The ladies will love that!
Well, if you've received anything from my brief advice, it's that the good folks in the RT community love to help and have a big heart! Just be mindful of these seven tips and you will be alright and everyone will live in peace and harmony – also, it helps to sit in the lotus position, hold you palms up, roll your eyes back into your head and just go, “Ooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!” - Last Edit: 18 years 1 month ago by Dave Goodwin.

Thanks, Andy. I tried to think of some valid points, but cloak them in a little humor.

Also, thanks guys! You make a great audience - or maybe you are twisted too, don't know! Remember! It's not about ME. Oh, I wish it were, sometime, but it's about the great community that you are and the beyond-the-bleeding-edge templates that Andy and Kevin bring. Have you seen nything that's this quality? No way!
