Re: Request Site Review Please...

    • I'd really appreciate a review of my site I'm readying for completion. Iut's not finished but I feel that it needs to load in at least half the time it takes. Switching to the PixelPerfect theme gives me about 25% but at a big aesthetic expense. Perhaps BentoBox would be a happy medium.

Using Octagate site timer (a great tool BTW!) shows that I'm limited mainly by my pictures, javascript, and css.

      So here are some questions;

      * Is it in fact too slow in your practical experience? (Merav at iJoomla clocked it at around 5-6 seconds however certainly she has a very high speed connection.)
      * Is it worthwhile to enable server-side compression with mod_gzip?
      * Are there any glaring problems either technically or from the standpoint of design or usability?

      Thank you all in advance!
      Bob

    • I'm in Washington D.C. I clicked on the URL and two minutes later I was still waiting. Some issues there. Check those links that Mack sent. Those might give you a clue where to look. Server-side compression may be your problem, though. People have had sluggish issues with that.

    • O.K you asked for it.... ;)

From a design and usability perspective:
      1.
Usability Issue for me was the drop-in ad box appearing multiple times, kind of a turn-off for me. I don't mind it once but it seemed to appear frequently, as I browsed the many links within the site.
      2.
There appears to maybe a problem with the "Inspiration" Module on the right column displaying all the input quotes at once. (see attached screenshot1)
      3.
Home Page seems somewhat "cluttered" to me, specifically two different bookmark modules, (bookmark us and best hits (maybe rename one of them?) The tag cloud module on left column seems a bit large, and may detract from a users perspective of the site. (not sure about from an SEO standpoint)
(maybe try using a few less modules? experiment a bit.)

      4. Site Load Time did seem to have a bit of a lag navigating from the forum to other areas of the site.

All in all to sum it up it appears that you have quite a good start on the site, and actually have some content that may interest your prospects.

      Regarding your first question:
      So here are some questions;

      * Is it in fact too slow in your practical experience? (Merav at iJoomla clocked it at around 5-6 seconds however certainly she has a very high speed connection.)

It did not appear to be too slow for me, however others on slower connections may have difficulties.
How much of a factor this will be I guess will be dependent upon your target demographic/audience.
(I am on a pretty decent connection though)

In regards to your question about gzip compression I am not able to help there. Maybe another RT member has some experience in this area?

I hope you find this reply as constructive, and I like I said above it looks like you have a pretty good start on the site.
      Cheers!

    • I agree on the drop down box. After the 5th time it dropped I left the site.

    • WOW! Thank you all So Much!

I can't tell you how much I appreciate your thoughtful comments. These were great, and I'm going to implement all of the changes you've each recommended!

SureLurksAlot: The Popup ( I recognize it is annoying ) was meant to let people know that I'm not up and running yet. It will go away. I hate those things too! *;o)

I will put you all in an Acknowledgments section!

    • This time the site took 30 seconds to load. I'm using a cable modem that's speedy on other sites.

I'm in the Wash DC area. If you are using a server in a different country, there may be just the lag in getting to me. Others may have no problem. It's an interesting site, though. Reminds me of 'The Secret'. I love the inspiration quotes!

    • Took about 40 seconds to load, I'm in Europe. Spent most of that time looking at a blank screen.

The pop-up caues a vertical scroll bar to appear (and remain) on the page (Firefox 2.0, OSX 10.4. 8) .

    • Thank you Peter and Dave,

I've been trying to find out why it took so long for you both. I believe that I know why. I probably have a couple of bad internal links due to moving the code over from my separate development server (my laptop ) which result in the Account being suspended for a short while. That seems to be the only rationale for order-or-30sec times unless you were on a dial-up modem. You were each waiting for the suspended state to change. (Bluehost.com suspends you if you use too many resources. )

I've gotten some CPU Exceeded messages and Account Suspended messages. I'll sort this out tomorrow.

However I was able to get a significant speed improvement ( around 38% ) by simply removing a couple of modules and mambots and the disabling the loading of the mootools functions ( they were still loading despite having disabled these features.)

      Robert,

Ah yes! That explains a lot. If you are constantly running at the edge of your alloted memory usage, the host will limit you. It might be that you need to use a different hosting package or even a dedicated server - but that can be a bit price! However, you've got 'millions', so that should be a problem, right ;)

Hope you get that fix. Let us know what you end up doing.
