    development site question

Posted 15 years 3 weeks ago
    • Hi,

I just backed up my primary site using Akeeba Backup and uploaded all the files to a test subdomain (mysite.com/test2) that I created for the development site. I reinstalled the site backup files using the Akeeba installer and removed the installation directory.

I want to download the new Quantive template and apply it to my primary site (via the test subdomain) and was wondering how I can do this without disrupting the primary site and keeping this process hidden from end users? I tried making some changes to the development site (mysite.com/test2) and noticed that those same changes were reflected on the primary site. Is this because the same database is associated with the primary and the test sites? Can any one tell me what I need to do to create a development site that mirrors the primary site so that I can work on it without impacting the primary site until I'm ready to relaunch? I'm a neophyte so I hope my description of the problem is clear and your help is much appreciated.

      Thanks,
      Tim

    • The development site should be altogether separate installation with it's own database. You should be able to install the new template to that dev installation, make all necessary edits, tweaks, test, etc.

When everything is working properly and looking good, publish a cute "come back in 15 minutes for the glorious relaunch" message as a index.html file in the root directory. Then create a directory to park the old installation into and move all its files to that folder. Move the new site from the development directory to the root folder and update the configuration.php file to update the directory paths as needed (it'll make sense when you see configuration.php).

    • Thank you very much for responding. My primary site has been live for several months and I've also installed a forum (phpbb3) which has active users, postings, etc. Can you tell me how I can migrate those users, postings, etc to the development site? Is this accomplished by updating the configuration.php file and if so, what do I need to do? My main concern is to retain all of my current members and content on my site including the forums.....

I guess its apparent that I'm a complete neophyte when it comes to these things so your help and advice is much appreciated....
