Use Xampp to view site

  • Use Xampp to view site

    • MY site has just been hacked so I have downloaded the entire site. I am checking it for malware.

But right now I just want to view the site on my PC or Mac. I have installed Xampp but I don't know how to get to view my site on the computer. Anyone know a good guide to using Xampp to view a Joomla site that you made on the web? Or just some tips would be great.

    • If you still have access to at least the backend of your site, you could use Akeeba back up to create a backup of your site and then install it on your local host.

After backing up the site, you would download the backup, extract it in a folder in htdocs on your local host, and run the install.

(Of course prior to running the install, you would need to create a new database. The new DB can be named as you like, it doesn’t have to match the site’s DB name and password, etc.)

The process is straightforward; the install runs exactly as a stock Joomla or RL package.

      Notes:
The current default file for Akeeba is .jpa, I suggest changing it to zip. .jpa is fine, but choosing the zip file and using it makes the process a bit easier because it mimics a normal install.

When you are setting up the files to backup, if the site is in the root, be sure to exclude any non-joomla files. For example, you won’t need cgi-bin or .htaccess, and in particular, you won’t want to be downloading and files or folders that were added or compromised.

If this option seems viable, or if you have any questions, we can provide more details.

    • Well my site has been nuked on the server now. Before that happened I had saved a JoomlaPack back up and am using Kickstart to extract it on the local host (run by Xampp). However when I click "Please click here to open JoomlaPack Installer restore script in a new window", it stops with the message below. What do you think has gone wrong?

Warning: require_once(C:\xampp\htdocs\dramaresource\installation\includes\defines.php) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\xampp\htdocs\dramaresource\installation\index.php on line 19

      Fatal error: require_once() [function.require]: Failed opening required 'C:\xampp\htdocs\dramaresource\installation\includes\defines.php' (include_path='.;C:\xampp\php\PEAR') in C:\xampp\htdocs\dramaresource\installation\index.php on line 19

    • Hi Pierre

Sorry I am slow to answer as I have problems with my emails now! I installed Joomla Pack last July/August I think so it could be an older version. I used their own method of compression. So that tool could be good.

If this doesn't work I also have a tar-zipped version of the entire site. You can imagine how frustrating it is to lose your site and not even be able to see the material you have spent years creating!

      Thanks for your continued help.

    • Hello!

The way I always did it was upload the tar file ssh to site untar then follow the installation.

On some bad server it required that you set perm to 777 to installation folder this is a real bad practice however I found it the way some server are set up also make sure you download your configuration and delete before running the installation.

Once all install delete the installation folder upgrade all your extension to the latest version

    • If its a .jpa file, check the dockmentation, there's a way to extract the server using their php file 'kickstart'.

I'm not sure exactly how it works, basically, the file goes in the directory, you browse to it, it finds the .jpa, extracts it, and runs the install.

    • Thanks for that - I'bve been using Kickstart and it works very well on moving a Joomla installation but for some reason it won't open my existing JoomlaPack back up of the old site. But I am asking the Akeeba people about that.
