    Record Company site - Omnicron

Posted 14 years 5 months ago
    • This one is my pride and joy.

      www.shoresmusic.com

it uses Omnicron, with some edits to the menu (changed the source files to make it transparent and edited the css to make it only as wide as it needs to be). I also used CSS to put the search box in the menu area.

I also found that if I switched the header style to I think the medium setting, it used a tiled gradient instead of a non-tiling image...that let me put the grunge background there with almost no extra work.

This site has more HTML overrides than I've ever done, mostly for little things like the embossed line under the breadcrumbs (they don't show on the home page). There are a few fun css things going on (like the little globes next to external links...the tag has to be added manually to the text though).

The Artist pages took me the most time. They're 2 column with several side modules. I made all the graphics you see (minus the iTunes/amazon/Cdbaby logos) and I created the Shores Music logo.

The Chart downloads are running on Docman with a modified template. I added a nifty CSS3 2 column tag, but for some reason the tops of the columns don't line up (most people won't notice). It falls back to single column on older browsers.

I used Rokbox for the small photos on the bottom of each artist page (I need to add another row to the Nic and Rachael page so it's balanced though).

Also, there's an RSS module loaded into Jacob's artist page that pulls his newest blog entry from blogspot, so we don't have to keep up with that whenever he posts something.

The section/category blog views are close to stock, though I added a tag that puts a nice embossed line under each article, just to break them up a bit.

I still plan to add music samples and other things as the site matures, but this was a good launching point.

Also, if you're curious, the store is actually Xcart. Too many issues with Vmart made us jump ship, and I had several unused X-cart licenses from old sites that clients had dumped. Worked out pretty well to use that.

Anyway, this is a good example of how you can really customize a template from RT.

    • Brian,

you can really be proud of this site. Nice customizations ... but the content looks really well organized too – that is something most people just not pay enough attention on.

    • Thanks :)

By the way, I used a little CSS trick to get embossed lines between some of the items on the site. It's a div tag with a top and bottom line, each a different color...but in IE (and maybe Chrome, can't remember) in Windows, the lines appear white. Don't really want to have to replace them with an image...and actually, the white isn't so bad, just not what I designed.

      I concur with Henning's comments.

I like your Joomla! sites Brian. This one is sweet.

    • Thanks for the kind words. Kathy, the Shores of Grace site is actually a bit old now and in need of a complete redesign. It's been sort of hacked together over the last year in my spare time (the Shores ministry is something I'm directly a part of, so I put my own time into it). It's held up well considering we've made so many changes in the past 3-4 months to add new things to it. Once we pulled the record company off to its own site, it was a bit easier to fit everything in the main nav bar on the shores site.

Anyway, hopefully there will be a totally sweet new template out when I got to do the redesign :)

      thanks!

    • You have done justice to the Omnicron template here Brian. You have pulled the red on grey off nicely, I often see sites where this colour combination just doesn't work.
