    Kirigami - Lucky Compiler

    Posted 12 years 7 months ago
    • Hello everybody,

      My latest project on web is now up and running at luckycompiler.com/ . It being largely content driven the only major component being used is K2 with allvideos plugin. The template of course is Kirigami with custom styling and fonts. For the Rocketeers, rokpad as editor saved me a lot of time and I am thankful for that.

      It is largely meant to showcase the work of creative individuals from various strata of creative fields in their own words. In the coming days I will be adding new contents at regular intervals which I hope will be a great read for everyone.

      I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank you, the people here in Rockettheme and in Joomla, whose constant support helped me to navigate the difficult waters during the development of the website.

      Let me know of your feedback.

      Thank you!

      Nice template. I am beginning work on the Kirigami template and I would like to change the background similar to what you have done in the custom styling. Could you share where those changes were made?

      I will show you you my project as it comes together for your feedback also.

      Thanks

    • Hi,
      Thank you for the appreciation!
      If you want to change the background pattern, it is super easy. First of all however, the pattern I am using you won't get anything like that on the internet because it is custom made by me (these days I may as well develop a site for patterns to be downloaded by others) but of course you can always choose one according to your liking from the web.
      The simplest way is to navigate to your template folder and under images you will find backgrounds where all the png files of the default background styles are stored. Once you have selected a pattern just transfer to that folder and name it to an existing png file like diamond, chrome, grunge etc (don't forget to take a backup of the original). After completion of this step go to your template manager from Joomla backend and select the name of the pattern as the background style, voila there you have it; with minimal efforts this is probably the best way to go.

      And let me know if you have anything else to ask, I will do my best to answer them back.

      Regards!

    • Just some suggestions...

      1. Do not use an intro/splash page because they're annoying for the user and it's easy to hit the back-button. Intro pages sort of died off 10+ years ago :)

      2. Change the font stuff so it will be easier to read the text:

      .customfontbody {
      font-family: 'BorgiaRegular',Georgia,Serif;
      font-size: 1.5em;
      }

      I would change that to something like:

      .customfontbody {
      font-family: sans-serif;
      font-size: 1.3em;
      }

      :)

    • Hi Prim,
      Thank your for such detailed feedback!
      First of all let me explain why I used an intro page in the website -
      (i) I am using quite a few images in the regular home page which of course is taking a bit of time in loading. That is why I first thought of going ahead with an intro page with minimal entries that will load fast;
      (ii) Secondly, I also did not post enough content to fill up the home page so thought it would be a better plan to make an intro page which would at the beginning get rid of the problem of a somewhat empty home page.
      While the second problem has been solved but I am not sure how to minimise the first problem without getting rid of the images of course.

      Lets get down to typefaces.
      You have advised me to get rid of Borgia, and use sans-serif instead; is it because it is Borgia or it is a serif font? The reason I am asking this is if I use sans serifs for the body too then the easy visual distinction between the sans serif headers and serif body text will be missing.

      Let me know of your opinion and thanks again for the feedback.

      Regards!

    • Serif fonts like Borgia are not designed for monitors, they were originally designed to be printed on paper. Examples of other serif fonts: Georgia, Times, Times New Roman...

      Sans-serif fonts were made for monitors and they are easier to read and they look nicer on websites. Examples of Sans Serif fonts: Roboto, Verdana, Arial...

    • Well Sans-Serif fonts are not "made" for screens.
      The are are invented way before the digital age.

      But the truth is most fonts are not made for screens. Sans-Serif or Serif or Slab-Serif - it doesnt matter. Due to issues with subpixel creation most Serif fonts do not look good in small sizes. I suggest a size of at least 14px or even 16px for Serif-Fonts. A very good serif font is Droid Serif for example.

      Btw all this will change with "Retina" displays.
      And just as a pointer:

    • Thanks for those responses Prim and Henning. And also thank you Henning for that 'awesome' resource.

      It is always nice to be a part of these kind of insightful discussions that leave you enriched one way or the other.
