A free kid's health resource by Michael Davis, MD, pediatrician and pediatric gastroenterologist.

      Comments on Replicant template:

I decided to switch from Versatility III. Replicant seems to have an infinite number of design possibilities! The site is actively being modified, so it may appear different minute to minute.

    • For a starters - it is a great site with lot's of potential. Your video's could be a big hit. Hopefully you continue to make the site not only good looking but extremely user friendly.

One thing I noticed is you have a lot of information - so, learning how to bring out the text into more of a magazine style would greatly benefit the reader e.g. quotes colored text boxes and highlights and something I find very effective and simple - shorter leads and smaller paragraphs. Lead is to peak their interest and shorter paragraphs hold their attention longer, also, makes it easier to scan back to a sentence of importance to the reader.

So, this paragraph below that looks like this -

Vegetarian diets have become more popular in recent years. Many parents chose to involve their children in vegetarian eating patterns. Approximately 7% of Americans consider themselves to be vegetarians and around 0.1% are vegan vegetarians (those who eat no animal food products at all). The definition of vegetarianism varies from person-to-person and the reason for chosing this diet also varies. Many believe that a vegetarian diet represents a healthier lifestyle while others chose the diet for religious or cultural reasons. Vegetarian adults have proven to live in good health on these special diets, however in children there are special considerations. Deficiency of iron and vitamin B12 is relatively common in vegetarian children.

Will now look like this -

-- take it or leave it :P but those are a few suggestions for now. Plus, if your site is funded by ad generated income - your ads are way off base...no they don't have to be obscene, but they do need to be better incorporated with the site. (Yes, I know your are just starting, but ad placement is good to work into the design, instead of an after thought.)

    • I greatly appreciate your advice! I have done websites before, but many years ago... I was actually an IT guy in a previous life (10 years ago)... medical school, residency and fellowship got in the way. But yes, my intention is to take this site to a new level. I once coded all my webpages using Microsoft Notepad and HTML!

I started using Joomla 3 months ago. RocketThemes are the best templates I have found. Perfectly professional. Now I just need to optimize the site. I love the "magazine look" idea! And I'm working on the AdSense ads. I just switched from Verstility III (which I like also) and haven't had a chance to tune it up yet.

A random question for anyone... I am having trouble with "Search Engine Friendly URLs." When I use it, many pages have errors and leave out modules. Is this necessary to optimize search traffic?

Update - I answered my own question. Joomla extension "sh404SEF" works great!!! Sorry, if this question should have been on another board.
