VersatilityII on Middle School Music Site

Posted 18 years 6 months ago
    • Hi - I created a site for a middle school's music program.

The site is primarily geared for 7th and 8th graders. It is also for 5th and 6th graders - and seems to have also taken on the High School Marching Band. Unfortunately, the school department here does not put any energy into web sites even though our state provides free lap top computers for all Middle school students to use ???

I would love some honest feedback. I am still working on it. Hopefully I can get a photo gallery and forum among other things that will only be accessed by users registered by the music teacher.

Some limitations I am working with:
      1. age of users
      2. inability to use photos at this time since legal stuff for permissions to use photos of kids needs to be resolved
      3. Many users likely have only old computers at home on dial-up - if they are lucky to have one. Others have the latest technology.
      4. School had blocked all nonschool sites because kids had been looking at porn :o . This site just got unblocked yesterday so the teacher was able to get back in - and hopefully the students.
      5. Training the teacher to use the site (e.g., have to keep going in and reducing huge font sizes she uses)
      6. That red is the school color and teacher wanted blue (which is the next city's color).
      7. Keeping kids safe

Please be gentle ;) - I am a middle aged mom who is completely self-taught and doing this as band-mom volunteer. No really - looking for honest. I am always willing to learn.

And lastly - is there anyway to change my username to Feathered Wonders instead of using my real name?? I have wanted to post here - but that has kept me from doing so.

Thanks in advance!! And thanks for these great templates and this wonderful forum where I have learned much by lurking!

    • Hi Ellen!
Your site is very good!!! I like so much the colors you are using.
If you can't put pictures of the kids, perhaps you can put some photos of the school and intruments in articles.
In the future, after resolve the legal question of pictures with kids, you will be able to put videos of them ;) I think the kids will love it.
Very good job for a very good proposal ;)

    • Great work!

What template did you work with to end up with that layout and color scheme? It's not like any of the demos I've seen around here.

    • HI "Michael's Mom" !! (you see i´ve read your website :D )

      i like your site , but ........
i dont like the admin link in the bottom >> amsmusic.org/administrator/

"Welcome to Auburn Middle School Music" and "Click on the Calendar Link to see important dates and time for the fall!!"
are different font types ........ for my eyes it´s not very good to read ........

and ...... some pictures in the content would be great ! :)

if i want to write in a guestbook, i dont search the link in "contact us" ::)

      so, well done Ellen !

sorry for my bad english !

      best regards from austria

    • Wow - I could not believe all the Rocket Theme members who took the time to check out the site I posted. This place is amazing. And thank you to thiose who responded.

Sorry I disappeared like that, but had a bit a surgery since I posted that I was in complete denial about having. :o Nothing serious - just extremely inconvenient.

To respond to Franck Benedittini: Thanks for your feedback. If the school instruments were nice enough - I'd go for photos of them. However, I did discuss with a grade school music teacher about audio and video recordings. I am hoping he can help me around some of these issues that keep the site a bit boring. I don't want to enter the "clip art" realm - so I have been left with nothing at the moment. I hope I can ask for your advice if they do allow video because that is currently beyond me with Joomla. I think I am going to try to add something until then though - it does look pretty boring without any photos or other graphics. Just have to figure out what!

To Philip Smith: Thanks for feedback. The theme I used is Versatility II - but I ended up colorizing things to get those bright colors that matched the school's colors (maroon and white) - and to make the teacher happy with the blue. Kind of US patriotric ;) - but what the heck. I used Paint Shop Pro to colorize since I don't have Photo Shop. Oh and I used a horizontal gradient instead of a vertical one for the right side.

And to Roman Bichler: Yes - I am Michael's mom. Thanks for looking. I agree about the pictures. It does look boring without them. But until I work out legal issues with school on posting photos - I am going to have to try to figure something out. As far as Admin link - wasn't sure where else to put it. I need it up there for the teacher, but wanted to keep the kiddies from noticing it too much. Any other suggestions. It has to exist, just not sure where else to hide it.

The guestbook got bumped from the top menu to "contact us" when the High School Marching Band sort of hijacked the site and I didn't have enough room. I actually did create a site for the High School last year - but they didn't seem to know what to do with it including sending me info to post - so I took it down. The Middle School teacher loves the site - so she keeps it current - hence Marching Band is now on there.

And I totally agree about the fonts! I was reducing the size - but I like the fonts all the same if possible. Problem is the teacher was trying to post with the site blocked from the school. I told her about how it looked and I may just go in and edit it to look more uniform. And your English is just fine, BTW.

Thanks again. I was overwhelmed by how many checked the site. Really made my day!
