OpenPotion Web Design - Kinetic with matching K2 theme

Posted 14 years 10 months ago
    • So I redid my own site:

Website URL (entered in the body of the post not the thread title please): http://www.openpotion.com

This is a huge leap forward from my last site http://www.openpotion.com/old which is probably the worst site I have ever done... (I made a custom black version of solar sentinel and it didn't work out as cool as I thought...) and I just didn't have time to change it but it was hurting leads (I got more with my site I had before that which was a yootheme design).

The overall look of the site is a monochrome color scheme (blue) and I kept it light so it felt easy and business-like. I made a black showcase area at first but then went to blue so it didn't feel as exclusive... but I may go back to it... in fact I debated so much about the background and showcase that I had to add them just under the home menu so I could keep changing them without going into the gantry system

Additional Extensions (Components, Modules, Plug ins): K2, RSForms Pro, RS SEO, google chatback plugin from question kit,

Custom Development: I created a custom k2 template by copying the k2 template into the kinetic template for override and then changing the css tags in the k2 to use the kinetic tags & css. It's a little rough around the edges, but I got all the ribbon titles and spans to work on k2 articles even in columns! Had a heck of a time finding a decent looking spot for the rokajax search... eventually had to use some css to shrink it up against the menu.

I created a custom "Mad Libs" style form since I read an article about such increasing conversion rates 20-40%. I one-upped that article by actually making it fun rather than just a boring letter... and doing it in a fun color...so...We'll see if it works!

Other Features: I used rokbok on my ringcentral click-to-call (when user click on a phone number) as well as google maps on my address. I created rokcandy tags for those. I did a tiny bit of integration with WHMCS, my billing system by creating a form in rokcandy that I placed in a module at the bottom...same with the whmcs domain checker at the bottom.

Developers on here might be interested in my portfolio which actually only showcases RocketTheme template sites... (I'm too poor to invest in another template club right now so I stick with the best!).

Any specific areas of my site that I'd like feedback on, if any: Hmmm... Anything really... if you have feedback of any type at all, I'd be grateful to hear it! Let me know which showcase/background combo you like best (options are under my home menu).

Additional Comments: I'm also debating about switching to the split menu... which I HATE... I HATE it on rockettheme.com... especially because I know what I want and hate having to load each page successively just to get to it... but I see how it would be nice to force my users, which are infrequent visitors (unlike here), to see each level.

      Anyhow... comments please!

    • Hi nice site - im just in development with another on kinetic here www.itdaq.co.uk/wilsdenautos/ - i like how you have added the social media to the bottom - any tips on how you did this?
Also im thinking of putting a form in the footer here as well - is this just a normal custom html module with a form in i take it?

    • hello,

I think you got there a clean visual, but the orange fun form is a little bit too bright? Not sure....
Maybe you put change the place where your latest articles are for a higher position? to give it more attention.

I wonder what plugin or module or component you are using to have the chat ballon on the right bottom of the page? That's interesting. How does it work?

That form is just an html form, but uses the css tags built in for kinetic... the social media are just icons with links, in a div styled with a negative bottom margin so its close to the module below it (domain search), in a custom_html module. Just google social media icons for a nice icon set.

Thanks so much... yeah I debated on the form, but when I used any color that wasn't bright it just didn't look "fun" nor eye-catching. Getting contacted is my TOP priority... much higher than them reading my articles... I want clients! So I left it that offending orange... normally I would have done it blue to match.

    • Nice design. I'm just now trying to learn:
      1. How to get all the headers blue
      2. How to get a slideshow
Can you give me some pointers?

First I would install the full demo on a server so you can get into the backend of the demo site and see how they did everything. Look at the demo page under features and then look under Module Variations.
