What is the best way to learn?

Posted 17 years 7 months ago
    • I apologize if this is a repeat question.

I have been running a business, taking degree classes, and CFP classes non-stop for 3 straight years. well I am finally getting a break this summer and would like nothing more than learning how to build a joomla template, preferably 1.5, from the ground up. I am not so concerned about the looks, but more about the programming; what is the best way to start?

I will do what it takes to pay my dues so I build it correctly. Its either this or I take piano lessons ;D

    • There are some tutorials available on: dev.joomla.org with regard to templates. However the best way is to get your hands dirty and rip into the code yourself. Start by looking at the default 1.5 template for now perhaps. There may be others who have better suggestions though :P

You cannot tell which way the train went by looking at the track.

    • I'll second Brad's comment. There really is no substitute for hands on experience.

After a bit of getting used to it, find a site that you like, that looks as though it could be done in Joomla!, and try to port it. If you initially have to port it into a template that already exists, don't worry about it. After you are done creating a look-a-like, you will be well on your way to understanding how templates work, and you can build a simple one.

The next thing that I would suggest doing is to take an existing template, and systematically comment out pieces of it, to see what happens. After you reactivate them, add detailed comments, so that you know what they do. If it is not immediately obvious, or if you encounter specific HTML, PHP or Joomlacode that you don't quite know, go look it up at W3schools, php.net or joomla.org and add that information to your comments.

Finally, create a clean install, and strip it to the bone - deactivate everything. Then, build a series of very simple templates, each to play with one or two specific things. By creating these "learning" templates, you won't have to worry about making every last thing work together, and can focus on a single menu type, module location, etc.

From there, you will probably figure out what the next thing is. For me, the hardest thing is probably CSS. Not that any specific part of it is hard, it is actually quite easy. The hard part is managing so many elements, and getting a cohesive site that is well organized and easy to maintain.

    • Awesome and quick responses guys.

I figured I might take apart the 1.5 template that Andy made. I checked it out a little bit, but come May 1st I can go crazy.

      Thanks!

Take piano lessons! It's awesome. I've been playing since I was 7 and it's a great way to just unwind and relax. I think I'm going to go play for a bit right now, as a matter of fact.

Oooh.. That'd be fun! During the holidays, there was an mp3 floating around with someguy that transposed Christmas Carols into minor keys, making them sound all dark. It was awesome. I'll see if I can still find it.

Here we go. With video! pandasmash.com/index.php?page=epi&epi_id=81
