How do you SEO-optimize Joomla URLs?

Hi everybody. Turning on Search Engine Friendly URLs in Joomla and changing the htaccess file, doesn't work for me. Is it possible to have search engine friendly URL's in Joomla? I have one of the latest Joomla versions. Any help will be appreciated! Thanks in advance

It does work.
Have you changed your Global Configuration settings?
Have you renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess?
Have you tried a 3rd party extension for SEF?

I went to Global Configuration, went to SEO and turned on SEF. Then I've changed the file you mentioned to .htaccess. Then I get the following message on all my pages except for the homepage:
The page you are trying to access does not exist.
Please select a page from the main menu.
This is from page404.php
No I haven't tried a 3rd party extention yet. Do you maybe know of any I can try? Thanks!

Install artio joomsef. Find it at extensions.j!.org.
On install, clear instructions are privided. print out and follow to the letter. Post back if you have issues. - Say no to Internet Explorer 6.
