Help! Creating A Component...

Hi everyone. I'm really hoping someone can help me out - I'm not a programmer, database guru, or anything like that, and I need to create a component that calls and writes to a database.
I have the database with tables and a few other pieces from what looks like a Wordpress installation, but need to create pretty much everything else to connect it to Joomla. Does anyone know of a good tutorial/step-by-step process out there that I can follow?
The database is an online music summer camp registration system that allows student to register for classes, and for instructors to view their classes, etc... I'm open to using a pre-existing component if I can find one, so any suggestions along those lines would be awesome, too.

Both are good, just slightly different feature in each.

Thank you, Rich. I have seen those two, but they aren't quite what I'm looking for - at least they don't appear to be.
The event registration portion is only part of what I need. That's why I think I may need to write my own component, although I have never done it before and am not entirely sure how.
What I really need is a system that allows not only registration for classes, but also for students and instructors to access their own records to see, for example, what students are in a given instructor's class, etc...
Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, neither of the event registration components you listed can do that.

Hey Adam,
Sorry those two didn't fit the bill.
It seems like you need something more along the lines of an online learning management system (LMS), in which case Joomlashowroon does have one ( www.joomlashowroom.com/joomlearn-lms-silver-edition.html ). They also do customization work.
Or, you could look a a moodle / joomla bridge.
If Joomlashowroom's doesn't fit you needs see if moodle will do the trick.Writing an entire component like you describe is a Major task, so I'd personally see if there's systems out there that can do most of what you are looking for and then paying for modifications.

I was afraid of that, Rich. :shock:
I might be able to make DT Register work if I can figure out how to assign an instructor to the class and allow them to display their classes and class attendees by class they are teaching... maybe I'll send them a message and see if that's a possibility.
The LMS systems have some issues along the same lines, actually, and are way more than I need. I'm not doing online education, so their main focus is overkill for me. I wish I was a database guy, because I know that what I really need isn't all that complicated - It just doesn't seem to exist yet as an integrated J! component.
Any idea what it would cost me to hire someone to do it?? I'm doing this site (youngmusicians.net) as a favor and not sure if I will get paid or not, so can't exactly go crazy paying for things... but would definitely consider it if I could get it done right.

Just a quick update, in case anyone has an idea that would help me... they had a full stand-alone registration system built before that I have modified to fit adequately within a wrapper - but I really would rather integrate it and Joomla together.
