Where to Start Learning, and How?

Posted 17 years 11 months ago
    • Hi,

I am a student currently in my second year @ University. I am interested in web development, and tend to play around with joomla, etc. But now I want to step ahead and actually learn how to do things from scratch, aka make a template from scratch not just for joomla, but for anything.

As in I'd like to learn how to do CSS editing, HTML etc.

What's a good place to start, and what's a good way to get good at it? I know about the tutorial site form Rocket Themes, but what's the best way to learn - how have you guys learned?

I was thinking of going through tutorials at w3schools.com/ - Is there someplace else or a better way to learn?

      Thanks & God Bless

    • Hi, good on you for wanting to learn about web development.

w3cschools is a good start for CSS related stuff.

If you want to do Joomla stuff it is also recommended to learn about PHP and MySQL to a lesser extent. Depends really how deep you want to go and what exactly you want to do.

If you just want to create templates, then a good understanding of HTML and CSS is imperative. There are heaps of sites dealing with these things, all you have to do is use Google and search for the various tutorial site on these topics. alistapart.com/ has great articles on web standards, usability and good design practices. For Joomla templates, you will also need a basic understanding about PHP since the dynamic content is put into the template by php calls.

If you want to do more serious stuff like module/component/plugin development you will need good php skills and a lot of time.

So, where and how to learn... I'm sure you'll get more good suggestions from others but again, Google is your friend and will find anything you need to know :) . You can also go to some computer course about web design and or php programming in your area.

      HTH

    • When I first started playing around with html, I used a WYSIWYG editor and I would create stuff in the WYSIWYG mode and then switch to the code view to try and figure out how the coding worked. On top of that I surfed the internet for lessons and to find answers to my questions (oh I had many, lol).

I have found that the Firefox Web Developer extension helps with html and in particular css. Editing css live using this extension can be quite informative.

phlux0r's suggestion to take a course is a good one, you cannot go wrong learning from a teacher.

      Best of luck and cheers!

    • I've found the online training library at Lynda.com < www.lynda.com/ > to be extremely helpful. Tons of software topics and the training videos are really high quality. For $25/month you can watch as many training videos as you want and you can cancel any time you want. There's no Joomla training there (yet), but lots on CSS and HTML, photoshop, etc. For me it's been a great resource.

Here's a link to get a free 24-hour pass to access the full online training library so you can check it out:
