Does anyone knows a reason why mootols would suddenly stop working?

There are many reasons. Perhaps you have installed a new component that also uses mootols. I experienced that with a component that loaded mootools a second time, and broke most site functionality.
Anyway, you have to be more specific so the experienced mods here can give you any help (like a link to the site, and more details on how it's not working etc.)
