Images used in a web site...

Hi all....
The question that I am going to ask is very idiot but because Im not a web designer nor web master nor programmer or something like that, I must ask:
It´s about images used in a web page...
There is a rule of thumb about the size, resolution, type, color scheme, format, etc for the images?....
For example, I want to load some images in Monoslideshow but this images it seems to me that they are too big....jpg,1.4 mb, 300 dpi,...I take this pictures with a 6 mega-pixels camera.....so Im not sure about how big is big... how small is small...how correct is correct...
Someone could give me some advice?

1.4 meg is waaaaay too big.
For images on a web page you want only a couple of hundred kb at the most. Mostly you want to try to keep them down to under 100kb each.
Any photos you take with a digital camera would usually be shrunk down to 25% or possibly even less in area. -

The thing to consider is this:
Most of your site's visitors will have a screen size of 1024x768 or 1280x1024. Some will be more, some will be less, and the wide screens will soon change that slightly, but for now, if you bear in mind that 1024x768 is likely the maximum size that you will want any photo to be, you will be at a good starting place.
From there, your slideshow is going to be quite a bit smaller than the full screen, most of the time, anyway.
Let's assume, for a moment, that your slideshow is going to be wider than it is tall. You might decide to go for 640X400 as a resolution, for instance. In order to get Mono to work properly, however, (especially using Ken Burns mode) you will want to make your images a little bit bigger, say 800X500.
Those images are obviously a lot smaller than your originals, but that is the nature of the Web. Most images are pretty small, because they are only intended for the screen, and not for print media. - www.gofftech.com Web Design

- and 72 DPI is all you need. 300 is waaay over the top for web images

If you are using Photoshop, you can resize your images under the Image --> Image Size menu. As already described, 72dpi and overall pixel dimensions of 800x500 will probably work best. Also be sure also to use the File --> Save for Web function in order to save your files with as small a file size as possible. For photos, JPG is the format you want and an image quality level of 40 or so should be fine.
If you're using ImageReady, it's basically the same as above except that to save the optimized version of the image, you go to File --> "Save Optimized As..."

Hi all...
Thanks a lot for the information, I reduced the photos to 658x494 and 100-120kb for MSS using Corel Photo-Paint...I believe that they are going to be the biggest photos in my site, the others are going to be smaller.
